Job Overview
We are looking for an enthusiastic and experienced GPhC-registered Pharmacy Technician to join our GP practice team. This is a practice-based role, working directly with our GPs, Clinical Pharmacist, nursing team, reception and administrative colleagues to support the safe, effective and efficient management of medicines for our patients.
The successful candidate will become an integral member of the practice team, with an important role in repeat prescribing, medicines reconciliation, medication queries, medicines safety and the continued development of efficient prescribing systems.
Previous general practice experience would be advantageous. We would also welcome applications from experienced community or hospital Pharmacy Technicians who are keen to develop their career within general practice.

We are proud of our friendly and experienced multidisciplinary team, comprising 4 GP Partners, 8 Salaried GPs, 2 Pharmacists, an FCP, Social Prescriber, 3 Practice Nurses, 2 Nursing Associates and an HCA. Our clinical team is supported by our Business Manager, Patient Services Manager and experienced administrative team.
We work from purpose-built premises and provide care to a practice population of approximately 13,900 patients.
We are a Training Practice with a strong culture of learning and professional development. We have successfully embedded eConsult within our total triage model for over four years, supported by a dedicated triage team. This helps ensure patients are directed to the right member of the team while giving our clinicians appropriate time to provide high-quality, patient-centred care
Job Description
· Support the safe and efficient management of repeat prescription requests in accordance with practice protocols.
· Carry out medicines’ reconciliation following hospital discharge, outpatient correspondence and new patient registration.
· Review medication changes and ensure electronic patient medication records are accurate and up to date.
· Identify medication discrepancies and refer clinical issues appropriately to a GP or Clinical Pharmacist.
· Respond to appropriate medication and prescription queries from patients and colleagues.
· Liaise with community pharmacies, hospitals, care homes and other healthcare professionals.
· Identify patients requiring medication review, monitoring or follow-up.
· Support agreed medication switches, medicines optimisation and cost-effective prescribing initiatives.
· Undertake prescribing searches, audits and quality-improvement work relating to medicines safety.
· Assist with QOF and Chronic Disease Management.
· Support the practice in responding to medicines alerts and safety communications.
· Contribute to the development and maintenance of practice prescribing procedures and protocols.
The postholder will work within their professional competencies and scope of practice, escalating clinical decisions or matters outside their competence to the appropriate GP, Clinical Pharmacist or other clinician.
Qualification and Experience
Essential
· Registered Pharmacy Technician with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC).
· Appropriate recognised Pharmacy Technician qualification, such as a Level 3 Diploma in the Principles and Practice for Pharmacy Technicians, or equivalent recognised qualification.
· Experience working as a qualified Pharmacy Technician.
· Good knowledge of medicines management, medicines optimisation and medicines safety.
· Excellent attention to detail, organisation and time management skills.
· Strong written and verbal communication skills, including confidence communicating sensitively with patients.
· Ability to work effectively with GPs, Clinical Pharmacists and the wider GP practice multidisciplinary team.
· Ability to work independently within defined procedures, professional competencies and scope of practice.
· Good IT skills and confidence using electronic clinical systems.
· Understanding of confidentiality, information governance and the importance of accurate clinical records.
· Completion of the relevant Centre for Pharmacy Postgraduate Education (CPPE) Primary care pharmacy education pathway (PCPEP) for Pharmacy Technicians, or willingness and eligibility to undertake and successfully complete the appropriate pathway within an agreed timeframe following appointment.
Desirable
· Previous experience working as a Pharmacy Technician in a GP practice.
· Completed CPPE Primary care pharmacy education pathway (PCPEP), or equivalent recognised primary-care Pharmacy Technician development programme.
· Experience using EMIS Web
· Experience managing repeat prescription processes within general practice.
· Experience of medicines reconciliation and dealing with medication queries from patients and community pharmacies.
· Experience undertaking prescribing audits, searches and medicines-safety work.
· Knowledge of primary-care prescribing processes and medicines optimisation.
