We are currently looking for an experienced chef to join our care home.
Job Purpose
You will be responsible for providing nutritious, appetising and well-balanced meals for residents, taking into account their individual dietary requirements, preferences, allergies and cultural or religious needs.
You will ensure that all meals are prepared and served to a high standard while maintaining excellent food hygiene, health and safety, and infection-control standards. The role requires a caring and person-centred approach, recognising that mealtimes are an important part of residents' wellbeing and daily experience.
Key Responsibilities
Food Preparation and Cooking
- Plan and prepare nutritious, varied and appealing menus for residents.
- Prepare meals in accordance with residents' individual dietary requirements, preferences and care plans.
- Cater for special diets, including modified-texture diets, allergies, intolerances and medical or therapeutic diets where required.
- Ensure appropriate portion control.
- Provide suitable alternatives where residents have specific food preferences or dietary restrictions.
- Ensure meals are served at the correct temperature and presented attractively.
- Take account of residents' feedback when planning and reviewing menus.
- Support special occasions, celebrations and themed meals within the care home.
Nutrition and Resident Wellbeing
- Work closely with care staff and management to understand residents' nutritional needs.
- Be aware of residents who may be at risk of malnutrition, dehydration or weight loss and ensure appropriate meals and snacks are provided.
- Support individual choices and promote dignity, independence and enjoyment at mealtimes.
- Maintain appropriate records relating to menus, special diets and food requirements.
- Communicate any concerns regarding residents' dietary needs to the appropriate member of staff.
Food Hygiene and Safety
- Maintain high standards of food hygiene and cleanliness at all times.
- Follow current food safety legislation and the home's food safety procedures.
- Ensure appropriate food storage, temperature monitoring, stock rotation and labelling.
- Prevent cross-contamination and manage allergens appropriately.
- Maintain accurate food safety records, including temperature and cleaning records where required.
- Ensure kitchen equipment is used safely and kept clean and in good working order.
- Report any equipment faults, hazards or maintenance requirements promptly.
- Follow the home's infection prevention and control procedures.
Stock and Kitchen Management
- Monitor food stocks and inform the appropriate person when supplies need replenishing.
- Assist with ordering food and supplies within agreed budgets.
- Minimise food waste through effective stock control and portion management.
- Check deliveries to ensure food is of suitable quality, quantity and temperature.
- Ensure food is stored correctly and used within appropriate dates.
Teamwork and Communication
- Report to the Head Chef.
- Work positively with care staff, management and other members of the catering team.
- Communicate effectively with residents and respond appropriately to their preferences and concerns.
- Attend relevant meetings, training and reviews as required.
- Contribute to a positive, respectful and supportive working environment.
Pay: £12.80 per hour
