Our mission is to maximise and advocate for the holistic health of all children, young people and the adults they will become, through world-class research, education and public engagement. The UCL GOS ICH, together with its clinical partner Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children, forms the largest concentration of children’s health research outside North America. The 2024-29 GOS ICH strategy focuses on its five scientific programmes. GOS ICH’s activities include active engagement with children and families, to ensure that our work is relevant and appropriate to their needs. GOS ICH generates the funding for our research by setting out our proposals in high quality applications to public, charitable and industrial funding bodies and disseminates the results of our research by publication in the medical and scientific literature, to clinicians, policy makers and the wider public. The Institute offers world-class education and training across a wide range of teaching and life learning programmes which address the needs of students and professional groups who are interested in and undertaking work relevant to child health. This is an exciting opportunity for a talented individual to make a significant contribution to the enhancement of research in children’s palliative care. The post holder will play a pivotal role in the academic work of the Louis Dundas Centre for Palliative Care for Children and Youth (LDC) and impact on the wider children’s palliative care network in the UK and provide standards of care for children, young people and families around the world. This post is funded until 30/09/2029 in the first instance.
We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated researcher who holds a PhD or equivalent doctorate in a relevant discipline such as nursing, medicine, psychology, sociology, pharmacy, or health sciences, with a strong focus on paediatric care and ideally experience in child and family-centred palliative care. The ideal candidate has a proven ability to design and conduct both qualitative and quantitative research that informs public health policy at local, national, or international levels, alongside experience in writing ethical applications and securing competitive research funding. They are proficient in analysing complex data using standard software packages such as NVivo, SPSS, or R, and are confident in managing and cleaning large datasets using tools such as SQL or equivalent. A strong understanding of data protection legislation, research governance, and information security is essential. The candidate demonstrates excellent analytical, numerical, written, and verbal communication skills, with a track record of producing high-quality academic outputs including peer-reviewed publications, conference presentations, and reports, as well as conducting thorough literature reviews. In addition, they bring a flexible, creative, and organised approach to their work, maintaining a high level of accuracy and attention to detail while effectively managing competing priorities and deadlines. They are able to work both independently and collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams, contributing positively to the team environment and taking initiative when needed. With strong interpersonal skills, they can establish and maintain effective working relationships with a wide range of stakeholders, including clinicians, researchers, families, charities, and data managers, and communicate complex ideas clearly and sensitively. Above all, they demonstrate a clear commitment to advancing equality, diversity, and inclusion, and to conducting research that meaningfully improves outcomes for children with serious illness and their families.
