Hours: 37 hours per week plus 30 minutes hours unpaid lunch break
Salary: £25,283 - £26,139 per annum (dependent on experience)
Contract: Permanent / Full-time
About the Role
We are looking for a practical, reliable and hardworking Site Assistant to join our busy Site Team at St Mark’s Church of England School.
Working across our all-through school site, you will support the Site Manager and Deputy Site Manager with the day-to-day maintenance, safety, security and upkeep of the school buildings and grounds.
This is a varied, hands-on role and would suit someone who takes pride in maintaining buildings and outdoor spaces to a high standard and is happy to respond flexibly to the changing needs of a busy school environment.
Key Responsibilities
As Site Assistant, your duties will include:
- Assisting the Site Manager and Deputy Site Manager with the effective day-to-day operation and maintenance of the school premises.
- Identifying maintenance issues and either carrying out appropriate repairs or reporting/escalating them to the Site Manager.
- Maintaining the school's grounds and landscaped areas, including grass cutting, hedge and shrub maintenance, weeding, leaf clearance and general grounds upkeep.
- Keeping external areas, pathways, entrances and communal spaces clean, tidy and safe.
- Supporting seasonal grounds work, including gritting and ensuring access routes remain safe during adverse weather.
- Carrying out routine building, premises and health & safety checks as directed.
- Reporting defects, hazards and health and safety concerns promptly.
- Assisting with the security of the premises, including opening and securing buildings when required.
- Supporting the preparation and movement of furniture, equipment and resources for school activities, events and room changes.
- Assisting with deliveries and the safe movement and storage of goods and equipment.
- Working alongside contractors and other site users as directed by the Site Manager.
- Responding promptly to urgent maintenance issues and requests arising during the school day.
- Supporting fire safety, emergency procedures and other premises-related compliance requirements.
- Undertaking other reasonable site and premises duties required to support the safe and effective operation of the school.
About You
We are looking for someone who:
- Has practical maintenance, caretaking, grounds maintenance or similar experience.
- Has good general DIY and practical skills.
- Ideally has experience of grounds or landscape maintenance.
- Has a good awareness of health and safety and safe working practices.
- Is able to identify problems and take a practical approach to resolving them.
- Is physically able to undertake a varied and active role, including working indoors and outdoors throughout the year.
- Can work independently while also being an effective member of the Site Team.
- Is organised, dependable and able to prioritise tasks.
- Is willing to respond flexibly to the operational needs of the school.
- Has a positive and professional approach when dealing with staff, pupils, parents, contractors and visitors.
- Understands the importance of safeguarding and maintaining a safe environment for children and young people.
Previous experience working within a school, estates, facilities, property maintenance, grounds maintenance or similar environment would be advantageous but is not essential for the right candidate.
