Family Support Worker – Romanian Speaking
Location: Plumstead area, Greenwich, London
Engagement: Freelance / Self-employed
Hours: 10 hours per week, with times agreed flexibly with the family
Duration: Minimum 6-month commitment
Rate: £22.50 per hour
Terra Consultancy is seeking an experienced and reliable Romanian-speaking Family Support Worker to support a Romanian-speaking family living in the Plumstead area of Greenwich.
The role involves providing practical, family-focused support to a mother and her 3-year-old child. The successful candidate will help the mother develop confidence in managing day-to-day parenting routines, support communication with professionals, accompany the family to medical and other appointments, and assist with practical activities within the home.
The mother will remain present at all times; this is not a childcare or lone-working role.
The successful candidate will need to be able to commit to 10 hours per week for a minimum of six months. The specific days and times will be agreed flexibly with the mother according to the family's needs.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide practical, non-judgemental support to the mother in developing and maintaining positive parenting routines.
- Support the mother with everyday family routines, including basic cooking, meal preparation and age-appropriate activities.
- Accompany the mother and child to medical, educational and other appointments where required.
- Provide Romanian-English communication support to assist the family in engaging effectively with professionals and services.
- Support the mother to understand and follow information provided by professionals.
- Encourage positive interaction, routines and activities that contribute to the child's development and wellbeing.
- Support the family in accessing appropriate community, educational and other services where required.
- Develop a positive, respectful and culturally responsive working relationship with the family.
- Observe and communicate relevant information or concerns to the appropriate professional.
- Complete a weekly written report summarising the support provided, progress, relevant observations and any issues requiring follow-up.
- Maintain appropriate professional boundaries, confidentiality and safeguarding standards at all times.
Essential Requirements
- Fluent spoken Romanian and English – essential.
- Previous experience working with children and/or families – essential.
- Experience providing practical, family-focused support in a professional setting.
- Ability to provide calm, respectful and non-judgemental support to parents.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Good organisational skills and the ability to provide clear written reports.
- Patience, reliability and cultural awareness.
- Ability to work flexibly and build a professional relationship with the family.
- Commitment to providing 10 hours of support per week for a minimum of six months.
Desirable Experience
Experience in one or more of the following would be advantageous:
- Family support or family advocacy.
- Supporting parents with parenting skills and family routines.
- SEND, learning disability or additional-needs support.
- Supporting adults who may require additional assistance with communication, organisation or everyday tasks.
- Working with families from migrant or multilingual backgrounds.
- Liaising with health, education, social care or other professional services.
Experience supporting adults with learning disabilities or additional needs would be particularly relevant to this role.
Safeguarding and Compliance
- An Enhanced DBS check is required, or the successful applicant must be willing to obtain one.
- The successful applicant will be required to comply with Terra Consultancy's safeguarding, confidentiality and professional conduct requirements.
- The role requires appropriate professional boundaries and accurate weekly reporting.
The role offers flexibility in how the 10 weekly hours are arranged, with the schedule agreed directly with the parent to meet the family's needs.
