We have an exciting opportunity for a commercially minded Legal Counsel to support Good Energy’s growing Solar Services business. The role will focus on construction, installation, procurement and supply chain matters, while also supporting wider commercial initiatives connected to the continued growth of our Services platform.
The right person will bring construction or projects experience, sound commercial judgement and an interest in getting close to the business. You’ll work closely with operational, commercial and proposition teams to help the business contract effectively, manage risk pragmatically and keep projects moving.
Responsibilities:
- Commercial support: Provide commercially focused legal advice to the Services business across construction, installation, procurement, supplier, subcontractor and project delivery matters.
- Contracting: Draft, review and negotiate JCT-based contracts, installation frameworks, supplier agreements, subcontractor terms, procurement documents, customer-facing terms and related project documentation.
- Services propositions: Support the development and evolution of Good Energy’s Services propositions, including recurring service, maintenance and subscription-based offerings, by providing commercially focused legal input on structure, customer terms and operational delivery models.
- Risk management: Help manage legal and commercial risks, including contract governance, supplier management, template agreements and escalation routes.
- Project delivery: Advise on legal issues arising during project delivery, including scope changes, delays, payment issues, defects, performance concerns, termination rights and dispute avoidance.
- Supply chain: Support the business in managing supply chain legal and commercial risk, including warranties, liabilities, service levels, delivery obligations, indemnities, insurance and product quality issues.
- Collaboration: Work closely with Services, Procurement, Finance, Operations, Propositions and stakeholders across Good Energy to deliver practical, commercially sensible solutions within agreed timelines.
- External counsel: Manage external legal advisers on specialist construction, procurement or project delivery matters where required, ensuring external spend remains proportionate and effective.
- Guidance and training: Assist with delivering training and guidance to the Services business on contract risk, procurement processes, dispute avoidance and escalation procedures.
- Commercial mindset: Build a strong understanding of operational delivery, procurement requirements and supply chain challenges to provide clear, pragmatic legal recommendations that support business objectives.
- Relationship building: Use strong emotional intelligence, communication and stakeholder management skills to build trusted relationships with colleagues at all levels across the business.
- Broad exposure: While the role is primarily focused on Services, construction and procurement matters, there may also be opportunities to support wider commercial contracting activity across the business from time to time
This role is likely to suit a commercially minded construction or projects lawyer looking to make a first or early move into a broader business-facing in-house role. We’re looking for a commercially minded and legally qualified professional with experience supporting construction, procurement, supply chain, installation or other project-based services. You’ll thrive in a fast-paced, operational environment where legal advice needs to be practical, proportionate and aligned to business priorities. You’ll bring strong contracting expertise and the confidence to work closely with operational, procurement and commercial teams, helping them navigate risk, make decisions quickly and keep projects moving.
Essentials:
Legal & Contracting Expertise
- Experience providing pragmatic legal support in construction, procurement, supply chain, installation, facilities, energy services or similar project-based environments
- Strong drafting and negotiation skills across commercial contracts, ideally including JCT contracts, framework agreements, supplier and subcontractor terms, and project delivery documentation
- Experience working in a business-facing legal role supporting operational, procurement, commercial and project delivery teams
Risk & Commercial Judgement
- Strong understanding of legal and commercial risk in procurement and delivery, including scope, specification, payment, delays, defects, quality, insurance, termination and dispute resolution
- Sound judgement to distinguish between issues that can be resolved pragmatically and those requiring escalation
- Ability to balance commercial priorities with legal and operational risk to deliver practical, workable solutions
- Ability to support live operational issues without overcomplicating or slowing down decision-making
Business & Stakeholder Focus
- Flexible and adaptable approach, with the ability to identify alternative contracting or risk allocation solutions where needed
- Understanding of construction, installation, procurement and supply chain environments and the realities of project delivery
- Strong communication and influencing skills, with confidence working across multiple stakeholder groups
- Ability to build trusted relationships across commercial, procurement, operational, finance and legal teams in fast-paced environments
- Comfortable making decisions and providing clear recommendations under pressure
- Able to work independently while escalating material risks appropriately
Desirables:
- In-house experience
- Experience in energy, renewables, facilities or similar sectors
- We are particularly interested in candidates who want to develop beyond a specialist construction remit and work closely with operational, commercial and proposition teams across the business.
