The Curious Mr Fox is an independent, family-run venue in the heart of Durham. We pride ourselves on delivering exceptional customer service, high standards, and memorable experiences across dining, cocktails, afternoon tea, private events, weddings, and special occasions.
We’re not a chain and we’re not a typical pub. We are passionate about creating an atmosphere that guests remember and recommend, whether they’re joining us for lunch, celebrating a milestone birthday, attending a cocktail masterclass, or hosting a private event.
As our business continues to grow, we’re looking for an enthusiastic and experienced Duty Manager to join our leadership team.
The Role
This is a hands-on management role where no two days are the same.
You’ll be responsible for leading shifts, motivating the small team, maintaining exceptional service standards, and ensuring the smooth running of the venue. You’ll play a key role in delivering everything from busy restaurant services to weddings, private functions, cocktail events, and seasonal experiences.
We’re looking for someone who genuinely enjoys hospitality, loves working with people, and takes pride in creating outstanding guest experiences.
What We’re Looking For
● Previous supervisory or management experience within hospitality
● A passion for customer service and attention to detail
● Strong leadership and communication skills
● Ability to remain calm under pressure
● A proactive approach to problem-solving
● Confidence leading busy service periods
- Confidence using computers, hospitality systems and digital platforms
● Comfortable creating or contributing to social media content
● A genuine interest in cocktails, events and hospitality experiences
● Personal licence holder preferred (but not essential)
Key Responsibilities
● Leading shifts and supporting the wider management team
● Delivering exceptional customer service at all times
● Coaching and developing team members
● Maintaining high standards of cleanliness and presentation
● Supporting with functions, weddings and private events
● Managing guest enquiries and resolving issues professionally
● Opening and closing the venue
● Cash handling and stock control duties
● Ensuring compliance with licensing and health & safety requirements
