Job Purpose
To support the commercial team in the successful delivery of asphalt surfacing and highway maintenance projects by assisting with cost management, measurement, valuation, procurement, and contract administration. This role provides an excellent opportunity to develop quantity surveying skills within the asphalt surfacing industry while working towards professional qualifications and industry experience.
Key Responsibilities
Commercial Support
- Assist in the preparation of cost estimates and tender submissions for asphalt surfacing projects.
- Support the measurement and valuation of works completed on site.
- Help prepare interim valuations, applications for payment, and final accounts.
- Maintain accurate records of project costs, variations, and commercial documentation.
- Assist with cost reporting and forecasting activities.
Project Monitoring
- Monitor project progress against budgets and report any cost variances.
- Liaise with site managers to gather information on labour, materials, and plant usage.
- Assist in tracking subcontractor performance and payments.
- Support the assessment and management of project variations and change orders.
Procurement
- Assist with obtaining quotations from suppliers and subcontractors.
- Help prepare purchase orders and subcontract documentation.
- Monitor material costs and supplier performance.
- Support negotiations with suppliers to achieve best value.
Contract Administration
- Assist in administering contracts in accordance with company procedures and client requirements.
- Help maintain project records, including correspondence, site instructions, and contract documents.
- Support compliance with contractual obligations and commercial procedures.
Site Involvement
- Attend site visits to gain an understanding of asphalt surfacing operations.
- Carry out site measurements and quantity take-offs where required.
- Build effective working relationships with operational teams, clients, and suppliers.
- Ensure awareness of health, safety, environmental, and quality requirements.
Skills and Experience
Essential
- Strong numerical and analytical skills.
- Good knowledge of Microsoft Office applications, particularly Excel.
- Excellent attention to detail and organisational skills.
- Strong communication and interpersonal abilities.
- Willingness to learn and develop within a commercial environment.
- Full UK driving licence (or working towards obtaining one).
Desirable
- Studying towards or recently completed a qualification in Quantity Surveying, Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or a related discipline.
- Basic understanding of construction contracts and commercial processes.
- Knowledge of highways, road construction, or asphalt surfacing activities.
