ASSISTANT ACCOUNTANT

We have an opportunity for an Assistant Accountant to join our team, working at our site in Tankersley on a full-time basis (37.5 hours).
The Role
Reporting to the Financial Accountant, the purpose of this role is to support the finance team across a broad range of activities within aspects of both operational and commercial finance, helping to deliver accurate financial information that support business performance and decision making.
Key responsibilities include:
Management Accounts & Period-End
- Assist in the preparation of monthly management accounts and financial reporting packs.
- Prepare month-end journals including accruals, prepayments and other accounting adjustments.
- Support reconciliations between accounts and weekly reports and investigate reconciling items.
- Contribute to the continuous improvement of month-end processes and reporting accuracy.
- Support timely production and delivery of Management Accounts and associated reporting to the Directors and wider business.
- Assist in the preparation and coordination of annual budgets and periodic forecasts across the business, including analysis of variances against actual performance.
Business Reporting & Commercial Analysis
- Produce weekly and periodic financial reports for the Commercial team, operational and departmental managers.
- Assist with the preparation of ad hoc financial analysis and reporting to support business initiatives, operational reviews and strategic decision-making.
- Support the improvement and automation of reporting processes where possible.
- Work with stakeholders across the business to provide financial information and insights to support decision-making.
- Assist with profitability analysis by customer and product type and suggest improvements to support increased profitability.
- Support the evaluation of business performance against budgets and forecasts.
- Customer rebate calculations and oversee timely credit processing, ensuring accuracy and a positive customer experience.
- Help identify opportunities to improve efficiency, controls and financial performance.
Banking, Payroll, Audit & Statutory Accounting
- Support the day-to-day cash flow function, including banking activities, cash management processes, and the preparation of cash flow reports.
- Take an active role in the monthly payroll process, assisting with the preparation, validation and reconciliation of payroll information to ensure employees are paid accurately and on time, maintaining strict confidentiality and demonstrating integrity and discretion when handling sensitive employee information.
- Assist with HMRC compliance activities, including the preparation of VAT returns, supporting P11D reporting requirements, and collating information for R&D tax relief and other statutory filings.
- Assist in the preparation of year-end financial statements and supporting schedules.
- Support external audit processes by gathering documentation and responding to information requests.
- Assist in maintaining accurate accounting records and supporting schedules to ensure audit readiness and compliance with statutory requirements.
Other duties
- Provide support to the Purchase Ledger function including invoice processing and supplier query resolution.
- Provide cover for daily invoicing and cash processes when required, ensuring a smooth flow of financial operations.
- Assist with Credit Control activities and customer account reconciliations.
- Support the wider Finance team with ad hoc reporting, analysis and project work, providing cover during peak workloads and absences while contributing positively to a collaborative, high-performing finance function.
Education and Experience:
- GCSE Maths & English
- Studying towards AAT/CIMA/ACCA/ACA or equivalent accounting qualification
- Experience of Accounting software
- Prior experience working within a Finance Function (essential)
