About the Role
As Transport Controller, you'll be responsible for coordinating the day-to-day transport operation, supporting our drivers and ensuring deliveries are completed safely, efficiently and on time.
Working closely with colleagues across the business, you'll manage operational challenges, maintain excellent customer communication and continuously look for ways to improve service and efficiency.
Key Responsibilities
Monitor vehicle movements and delivery progress throughout the day, ensuring deliveries are completed safely and on time.
Respond promptly to operational disruptions, delays, breakdowns and customer issues.
Coordinate the daily dispatch of drivers, ensuring routes are planned and delivered efficiently to meet customer requirements.
Monitor driver performance, attendance and compliance with company policies, transport legislation and safety standards.
Provide day-to-day support, guidance and communication to drivers throughout their shifts.
Promote a strong safety culture and ensure compliance with Health & Safety procedures.
Report and investigate vehicle accidents, incidents and near misses where required.
Ensure daily vehicle safety checks are completed and accurately recorded.
Maintain regular communication with customers regarding deliveries, service updates and operational issues.
Resolve customer queries, complaints and service issues in a professional and timely manner.
Ensure agreed service levels and delivery targets are consistently achieved.
Identify opportunities to improve transport efficiency, productivity and operating costs.
Support transport improvement projects and operational changes.
Deliver driver inductions, carry out driving assessments and provide additional coaching and training where required.
Promote best practice across transport operations and compliance.
Support other departments during busy periods, holidays and sickness absence.
Undertake any other reasonable duties required to support the successful operation of the business.
What We're Looking For
We're looking for an organised and proactive individual with previous transport or logistics experience who enjoys working in a dynamic environment and can make confident decisions under pressure.
You will ideally have:
Previous experience in a Transport Controller, Transport Planner or similar logistics role.
Experience planning within a temperature-controlled distribution or FMCG environment.
A good understanding of UK drivers' hours legislation and transport compliance.
Experience coordinating resources, including drivers and vehicles, to meet operational demands.
Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to build effective working relationships at all levels.
Excellent organisational skills with the ability to prioritise workloads and adapt to changing business needs.
A proactive approach to problem solving and the confidence to make sound operational decisions.
Experience producing and analysing operational data and performance reports.
Good IT skills, including experience using ERP, Warehouse Management Systems (WMS) and Transport Management Systems (TMS).
High attention to detail and a commitment to delivering excellent customer service.
