There is an opportunity for a Band 3 Community Phlebotomist to work within the District Nursing service in Sandwell. There are a total of 3 phlebotomists who work in Sandwell District Nursing, each covering a twin-town team model. This post is for the Rowley Regis and Tipton areas (Red and Orange Team).
If you have previous experience in Phlebotomy or Healthcare Assistant work, this role may be ideal for you. It is a full-time vacancy, working predominantly Monday-Friday with a potential expectancy to contribute towards late shift working til 8pm and weekend working on a rota basis.
This role involves working alone so initiative is required for the role, alongside a full UK driving license and access to a vehicle for business purposes.
A community phlebotomist will work closely alongside the District Nursing teams and perform phlebotomy within patients' homes or other care facilities. This is for patient's who are housebound and cannot attend a GP surgery or other point of care. You will be working automomously, managing your own patient lists' and managing a waiting list of patient's requiring a blood test in the local area. You will be provided with full training, support from an individual Practice Education Lead and you will be under the management of a District Nurse Team Leader within a District Nursing team. You will have interface with different District Nursing teams and be able to build relationships and rapports up with these teams as you support the caseload.
You will need to hold a valid UK driving license and previous experience in phlebotomy and healthcare assistant roles is advantageous.

Perform blood collection duties autonomously within the Community (visiting patients in their own homes) using invasive techniques. As part of a team, the post holder will assist in the provision of a patient friendly phlebotomy service to all District Nursing teams using computerised electronic requests from G.P. surgeries and community teams. Any concerns with regard to phlebotomy, the post holder must inform the Teamleader.
- At all times, ensure stringent health and safety protocols of the Trust and Pathology Department are adhered to.
- Blood specimens are taken in a manner that does not cause undue anxiety to the patient.
- Laboratories are provided with timely, high quality blood specimens taken in tubes that are appropriate for the tests requested.
- The District Nursing service operates 7 days a week between the hours of 8am-8pm. Weekend and late shift working may be expected on a rota basis.
- Follow all Health and Safety procedures (as instructed) to ensure the safety of the patient and phlebotomist at all times.
- Follow all necessary procedures to ensure that the patient is correctly identified before proceeding with blood taking.
- Ensure the correct documentation is used and completed according to Trust policies and Phlebotomy standard operating procedures.
- Ensure the safe disposal of blood samples and materials according to the Trust Health and Safety protocols.
- Undergo and further Phlebotomy training at the start of employment.
- Attend any other courses that are relevant to the phlebotomy role and keep up to date with current procedures and policies.
- Provide a phlebotomy service to District Nursing Services and use a computerised appointment system.
- Deliver training to those requiring Phlebotomy skills or undertaking the Phlebotomy course.
- Adopt a patient friendly manner that promotes confidence in the patient and carer(s).
- Identify analytical requirements from request forms and take appropriate specimens.
- Transfer specimens into appropriate containers and ensure accurate labelling.
- Ensure specimens are transported to laboratories in optimum time.
- Maintain stocks of materials for all Phlebotomy activities.
- Effectively communicate with staff and members of the public.
- The post holder will be flexible to cover holidays and absences.
- Carry out any other duties applicable to the grade as determined by the Teamleader.
The post holder must maintain confidentiality of information relating to patients, staff and other Health Service business.
