The Olive Tree is an independent country pub at the heart of Sutton Green, serving our local community as well as customers who travel from further afield to visit us.
We are a busy, friendly, food-led pub with plenty going on throughout the year. Alongside our normal lunch and dinner service, we host everything from monthly quizzes and bingo to live music, darts, private functions, classic car meets and summer BBQs.
We are now looking for an experienced Bar Supervisor / Senior Front of House team member to join us.
The role
We need someone who is comfortable taking responsibility for a shift and who can keep things running smoothly, whether it is a quiet weekday lunch or a packed Saturday evening.
You'll work alongside our existing team, Bar Manager and owners, helping us maintain the friendly, professional and personal service our customers expect.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Supervising and supporting the front-of-house team during service
- Opening and closing the pub when required
- Running the bar and overseeing restaurant service
- Ensuring customers receive a warm welcome and excellent service
- Handling cash and card payments and completing end-of-shift procedures
- Maintaining high standards of cleanliness and presentation
- Helping organise the team during busy services and events
- Dealing confidently and professionally with customer queries
- Supporting and training less-experienced members of the team
- Generally being someone we can rely upon to keep things running smoothly when it gets busy
As an independent pub, occasionally everyone has to turn their hand to something outside the formal job description. That might even include an emergency dash to Sainsbury's when somebody discovers we've run out of something at precisely the wrong moment, so a full driving licence is essential.
Who we're looking for
Previous bar, pub, restaurant or hospitality experience is essential, ideally including some supervisory responsibility.
More importantly, we're looking for someone who is:
- Reliable and genuinely enjoys hospitality
- Friendly, confident and comfortable talking to customers
- Calm and organised when things get busy
- Happy to take responsibility and make sensible decisions
- Able to lead a small team without needing to make a song and dance about being "the boss"
- Prepared to get stuck in and work alongside everyone else
- Flexible enough to work a mixture of weekday and weekend shifts, including lunches and evenings
Hours
The position is approximately 35–40 hours per week, spread across a mixture of weekday and weekend lunch and evening shifts.
For the right person, we're happy to discuss how those hours are arranged.
We would also consider two experienced people sharing the position, so if you're looking for a regular part-time role rather than 35–40 hours, we'd still like to hear from you.
Pay
The starting rate is £14.50 per hour, depending upon experience.
In addition, the team receives tips which currently average approximately £3.50 per hour worked across a typical week, and are frequently considerably higher.
This means effective earnings are commonly around £18 per hour, although tips naturally vary and aren't guaranteed.
Most importantly...
We're not a chain and we're not looking for somebody who wants to stand at the end of the bar with a clipboard.
We're looking for an experienced hospitality person who enjoys looking after customers, can confidently take charge of a shift, has a sense of humour and wants to become part of a friendly independent pub and the community around it.
If that sounds like you, we'd love to hear from you.
Pay: From £14.50 per hour
