Role Overview
Lester Cladding is looking for a reliable and proactive Yard / Stores Operative to support our busy construction operations. This is a hands-on, outdoor role based in our secure yard, responsible for managing plant, vehicles, and storage containers & their contents (some with canopy cover) that support multiple live construction sites. The yard also has a dedicated welfare unit, which will be used as a base for day-to-day stores management and administration.
The role is primarily focused around managing our yard-based stores, with Class 2 driving duties required on an as-and-when basis to provide holiday and absence cover for our dedicated drivers.
You will play a key role in keeping materials, equipment, and assets organised, compliant, and ready for site use, working closely with office, transport, and site teams. This position suits someone organised, practical, and comfortable taking ownership of a dynamic outdoor working environment.
Key Responsibilities
Yard & Stores Operations (Primary Focus)
- Receive, unload, and put away deliveries safely within the yard environment, using manual handling methods and mechanical equipment in line with health & safety requirements.
- Check all incoming deliveries against delivery notes, reporting shortages, damages, or discrepancies to the purchasing team.
- Maintain a clean, well-organised, and clearly laid-out yard, including containers, covered storage areas, and welfare units.
- Manage the storage, organisation, and re-stocking of fixings, ancillaries, materials, and site equipment.
- Carry out regular stock checks and liaise with office and purchasing teams to ensure appropriate stock levels are maintained.
- Clear, sort, and re-stock containers returned from construction sites, ensuring materials are accurately checked and returned to stock.
- Support the preparation of materials, plant, and equipment for upcoming site requirements.
Asset Management, Compliance & Systems
- Use the company’s digital health & safety system (Inndex) to manage and track asset locations, inspections, and records.
- Liaise with the office team to ensure lifting equipment, plant, and accessories are compliant and in date in accordance with LOLER requirements.
- Help coordinate and track the movement of plant, tools, and equipment across sites, vehicles, and yard storage.
- Undertake regular audits of company vans and vehicles to ensure tools and equipment are present, serviceable, and safely stored.
- Assist with general yard, asset, and compliance audits to support health, safety, and operational standards.
Driving Duties (As Required / Cover Role)
- Operate 3.5 tonne, 7.5 tonne, and 18 tonne vehicles, including flatbeds, as required to provide holiday and absence cover.
- Deliver stocked or manufactured goods to construction sites safely and efficiently.
- Carry out pre-use and post-use vehicle checks, ensuring vehicles remain roadworthy and compliant.
- Secure loads correctly and comply with road traffic legislation, company procedures, and health & safety standards.
- Report vehicle defects, incidents, or maintenance issues promptly.
What We’re Looking For
- Valid Class 2 (Category C) driving licence (essential for cover duties).
- Forklift experience (licence preferred).
- IPAF Load+ qualification (or experience with loading & unloading plant for transit).
- Telehandler experience (CPCS/NPORS certification desirable).
- Previous experience in a yard, stores, logistics, construction, or similar operational environment is advantageous.
- Comfortable working in an outdoor, practical setting across varying weather conditions.
- Confident using digital systems for asset tracking and compliance (training provided).
- Organised, reliable, and detail-focused, with a strong commitment to health & safety.
- Flexible, proactive, and willing to support multiple teams across the business.
