Purpose of the role
This is a hands-on standalone HR Lead role with ownership of day-to-day HR, payroll administration, employee relations, compliance and culture at Speeds Healthcare.
Reporting to the Finance Director, the HR Lead will support managers with practical ER advice, improve consistency and manager confidence, and use external specialist support for complex or higher-risk matters.
Key responsibilities
HR operations and advice
· Act as the main contact for routine HR queries, advising managers on policies, terms, absence, conduct, capability, performance and other people matters.
· Maintain accurate HR records and manage the HRIS, including reports on absence, holiday, training and other people data.
· Keep HR policies, templates and the Employee Handbook compliant, current and fit for purpose, coordinating specialist input where needed.
Employee relations and change
· Manage routine ER casework, including disciplinary, grievance, absence, capability and performance matters.
· Prepare HR process documents, meeting notes and outcome letters, escalating complex or higher-risk cases where required.
· Manage occupational health referrals and exit interviews, identifying themes or trends for management.
· Support change activity, including restructures, consultation preparation and employee communications.
Recruitment, onboarding and development
· Support recruitment and onboarding, including offer letters, contracts, pre-employment checks, right-to-work checks, induction, ID badges and IT coordination.
· Collate and manage Enhanced DBS checks where required.
· Track mandatory training and support wider learning and development activity.
· Support managers with probation, performance reviews and follow-up actions.
Payroll administration
· Prepare monthly payroll changes accurately and on time, including starters, leavers, contractual changes, absence and statutory payment information.
· Maintain clear, approved and auditable payroll records.
· Work with Finance, payroll contacts and external providers to resolve pay, pension and employee benefit queries.
· Upload pension contribution schedules and support pension, benefits and statutory payment administration where required.
Employee engagement and culture
· Lead the monthly Employee Culture Focus Group, capturing feedback, actions and follow-up.
· Support practical engagement initiatives, recognition activity, awareness days and colleague events.
· Write and send company-wide updates and internal communications, including business updates, new starters, leavers and colleague recognition.
· Help managers reinforce Speeds’ values, standards and expected behaviours.
Compliance and reporting
· Maintain employment compliance records, including right-to-work, DBS, mandatory training and required checks.
· Produce HR reports and monthly SLT people slides covering headcount, absence, turnover, vacancies and other people measures.
· Monitor probation, training, absence and performance review completion, supporting improvements in manager capability, consistency and accountability.
Salary up to £45k for candidates with proven standalone HR, ER and manager coaching experience
