Job Summary
We are a small family farm with a diverse team located in sunny Scarisbrick, a mere stone's throw from transport links to the Southport, Ormskirk, and Burscough areas. We have a washing and packaging yard for carrots primarily, among other associated activities.
We are looking for a reliable and physically capable Yard Operative to join our small and supportive team. The successful candidate will be responsible for the efficient handling, sorting, and movement of materials within our yard, supporting warehouse operations, and ensuring safety standards are maintained. This role offers an opportunity to develop skills in warehouse operations, materials handling and sorting, and mechanical operations within a dynamic environment.
Responsibilities
- Assist in the final manual sorting of fresh produce prior to packing and develop quality control skills.
- Operate forklifts and other warehouse equipment safely and efficiently to load, unload, and transport materials.
- Assist with shipping and receiving activities, including verifying deliveries and preparing items for dispatch.
- Load and unload lorries, ensuring accurate placement of goods in designated areas.
- Handle and sort materials with care, adhering to health and safety regulations to prevent damage or injury.
- Support warehouse management systems for stock control and inventory tracking.
- Conduct routine maintenance checks on mechanical equipment and report any faults promptly.
- Assist in the basic maintenance and repair of mechanical equipment (under supervision initially).
- Assist with organising the yard layout to optimise space utilisation and workflow.
- Perform manual handling tasks, including heavy lifting, in accordance with safety guidelines.
- Contribute to maintaining a clean, organised, and safe working and farm environment.
Requirements
- Proven experience in warehouse operations is preferred.
- Valid forklift licence is highly desirable; relevant training can be provided for suitable candidates.
- Knowledge of warehouse management systems is advantageous.
- Mechanical knowledge or experience with materials handling equipment is beneficial.
- Ability to perform heavy lifting safely and efficiently during daily tasks.
- Experience in shipping & receiving processes is desirable.
- Good organisational skills with attention to detail when managing stock movements.
- Physical fitness to stand for extended periods and perform manual handling tasks such as sorting and stacking product effectively.
- A proactive attitude towards health & safety protocols is essential.
