The Home to School Transport Service coordinates around 350 transport routes and provides transport for more than 1,400 children and young people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) each school day. Working with a combination of internal transport resources and external providers, the service delivers essential transport both within Rotherham and to specialist educational settings outside the borough.
Due to continued growth in demand for our services, we are looking to recruit two Travel Planning Officers to join our dedicated Travel Planning Team.
Based at Hellaby Depot, this is a fast-paced, office-based role where no two days are the same. The service operates between 6:30am and 6:00pm, Monday to Friday, and successful candidates will be required to work on a rota basis that includes a mix of early starts and later finishes.
As a Travel Planning Officer, you will be responsible for managing transport arrangements for a designated group of schools, ensuring pupils are safely and appropriately allocated to transport provision that meets their individual needs. You will coordinate and schedule passengers and vehicles, procure transport routes through competitive tendering exercises, and ensure services deliver both value for money and the highest standards of quality and safety.
The role also includes day-to-day line management responsibility for a team of Drivers and Passenger and Transport Assistants, alongside working closely with schools, parents, carers, contractors and colleagues to develop effective transport solutions for pupils with complex needs.
As the Council has a statutory responsibility to provide free home-to-school transport for eligible pupils, applicants must have a good understanding of safeguarding responsibilities and the importance of adhering to compliance, health and safety, and transport legislation.
For an informal discussion about the role, please contact: Carrie Ridgeway - Travel Planning Manager via email:
