C Toms and Son Ltd is a family run boatyard working in both the fishing industry and the leisure sector. Offering both new build and refit work for the fishing industry as well as boat storage and repairs for yachts and small craft. Alongside the boatyard the company also owns and operates the Bodinnick car ferry and the Polruan passenger ferry.
About the Role:
Working as an Assistant Works Manager you will be working closely with our Managing Director to assist him with managing the work underway within the yard. The role involves working across all aspects of vessel maintenance and refits, from liaising with the owner to compile a works list, assisting with planning the work and monitoring the work carried out, to ensuring a high level of quality is maintained and any inspection or compliance criteria are met. Day to day work will mainly focus on work on commercial and fishing vessels up to 350 tonnes with work taking place on vessels on the quayside, slipway and alongside our pontoon, the role is primarily yard based rather than office based.
Previous experience within the marine industry is essential, preferably dealing with commercial vessels. Additional marine qualifications would be an advantage.
There is scope for the successful applicant to bring additional skills to the role, qualifications or experience in any of the following would be an advantage: marine engineering, marine carpentry or welding, for instance. Additionally there is further scope to develop the role over time depending on experience and skillset.
Responsibilities Include:
· Compiling Job Lists in conjunction with vessel owners and skippers either before or on arrival.
· Liaising with the Managing Director and Stores Manager on ordering of job specific items to the vessel timescale.
· Working under the direction of the Managing Director to understand and then carry out the planning for trades working on vessels.
· Monitoring the work carried out to ensure it is completed within the required timescale and to a high standard.
· Working with the vessel owners and the Managing Director to ensure compliance and book appropriate inspections as required.
· Recording work carried out at all stages through photographs and record keeping and passing this information on to the office for compiling Job Reports.
· Ensuring that work is carried out following the appropriate Health and Safety procedures and assisting with ensuring the correct practices are followed.
· To perform all aspects of an Assistant Works Managers duties, whilst following company policies and procedures.
· Being responsible for any equipment and PPE issued, including checking, cleaning and returning.
· Following company health and safety policy and working in a safe and tidy manner at all times.
· Working alongside welders, electricians, painters and other specialist trades on projects.
· Attending training as and when required to maintain existing qualifications and develop new skills used within the business.
Pay: From £35,360.00 per year
