We are seeking an experienced and passionate Vision Rehabilitation Specialist to join our dedicated Sensory Services team.
About the Role
This is an exciting opportunity to make a meaningful difference to the lives of people with visual impairments and deafblind individuals across Luton. You will provide specialist rehabilitation support, helping people develop the skills, confidence and strategies needed to live independently and safely within their communities.
You will receive and coordinate referrals, undertake specialist sensory assessments, including complex cases, and deliver rehabilitation programmes focused on mobility, orientation and independent living skills. You will also complete Carers Assessments, Mental Capacity Assessments and contribute to support planning and reviews.
Working within a multi-disciplinary environment, you will play a key role in shaping personalised care pathways that maximise choice, control and independence while promoting rehabilitative and enablement approaches across Adult Social Care.
Key Responsibilities
- Undertake Specialist Sensory Assessments for adults and children with visual impairments and deafblindness.
- Deliver rehabilitation programmes to improve mobility, orientation and independent living skills.
- Complete Carers Assessments, Mental Capacity Assessments and support planning activities.
- Manage complex and challenging cases involving vulnerability, risk and crisis intervention.
- Coach, mentor and support Outreach Workers and Social Care Assessors in assessment and casework practice.
- Promote personalised, strengths-based approaches that maximise independence and wellbeing.
- Work collaboratively with health professionals, community organisations and partner agencies.
- Influence service development by identifying emerging needs and contributing to strategic planning and commissioning.
- Promote accessibility, inclusion and social participation across local communities.
- Maintain accurate records and produce high-quality reports, assessments and correspondence.

Essential Qualifications and Skills:
- Educational Background: Dip HE in Visual Rehabilitation Studies or equivalent (minimum Level 5, 2-year full-time course or part-time equivalent).
- Professional Registration: Accredited by the Rehabilitation Workers Professional Network, recognized by the Professional Standards Authority for Health and Social Care.
- Legislative Knowledge: In-depth understanding of social care legislation and regulations, including the Care Act 2014, Sensory Best Practice Guidance, Making Safeguarding Personal, and more.
- Customer Interface Experience: Skilled in working within a customer-focused environment with different adult social care client groups.
- Organizational Skills: Ability to manage competing pressures and priorities, plan workloads effectively, and meet strict deadlines while maintaining high standards.
- Commitment to Equality: Strong knowledge and understanding of equality issues, ensuring non-discriminatory service delivery.
- Ongoing Development: Committed to personal and professional development, with a willingness to undertake post-qualifying training and acquire new skills.
Additional Requirements:
- Home Visits: Ability to visit customers and families in their homes daily.
- Flexible Working Hours: Willing to work outside normal office hours occasionally.
- Research and Project Work: Engage in small-scale projects related to the rehabilitation needs of visually impaired or deafblind service users.
- Practice Educator Training: Willingness to undergo training to support educational practice within the team.
