About the Role
Study Mind is seeking an experienced SEN Tutor to support a bright and ambitious young person who has been out of education for a prolonged period due to Autism, significant school anxiety and emotionally based school avoidance (EBSA).
This role combines 8 hours of GCSE tuition with 2 hours of mentoring each week, helping the student rebuild confidence, prepare for qualifications and begin working towards her long-term ambition of progressing to college and university.
This is an excellent opportunity for a tutor who enjoys supporting academically able students whose barriers to learning stem from anxiety rather than ability.
About the Student
Our student is an intelligent Year 11 learner who has missed a significant amount of secondary education but remains highly motivated to achieve her goals.
She has a recently confirmed Autism diagnosis, is awaiting an ADHD assessment and is currently receiving treatment for OCD. Despite these challenges, she is naturally academic, has an excellent vocabulary and quickly grasps new concepts when lessons capture her interest.
She dreams of attending college and university and hopes to build a successful future through education. She simply needs the right tutor to help her rediscover confidence and structure her learning.
The Role Will Include
- Delivering engaging 1:1 GCSE English and Maths tuition.
- Completing an initial baseline assessment to establish current attainment and GCSE pathway.
- Providing one weekly mentoring session focused on confidence, resilience and educational engagement.
- Creating structured lesson plans and homework to encourage independent study between sessions.
- Supporting preparation for GCSE examinations and liaising regarding exam centre arrangements.
- Helping build the confidence and routines needed for eventual reintegration into education.
Ideal Tutor Experience
We're looking for someone with experience supporting young people with:
- Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC)
- Emotionally Based School Avoidance (EBSA)
- Anxiety and low confidence
- ADHD (or suspected ADHD)
- OCD or anxiety-related conditions
- GCSE English and/or Maths
- Secondary learners returning after prolonged absence
Experience delivering GCSE tuition to students working towards Higher Tier qualifications would be highly advantageous.
Student Interests
Building rapport through shared interests will be key.
She enjoys:

She is particularly motivated by her ambition to attend college and university, making future aspirations an excellent tool for maintaining engagement.

The successful tutor will:
- Build trust before introducing academic challenge.
- Deliver structured, well-planned lessons with clear routines.
- Break learning into manageable steps with frequent opportunities for success.
- Set meaningful homework between sessions to maintain momentum.
- Use her strengths in English and History to build confidence.
- Support concentration through regular breaks and varied activities.
- Keep learning focused on one topic at a time to reduce overwhelm and improve attention.
- Adapt teaching sensitively to suit Autism and ADHD-related needs.

- Experienced teaching the GCSE curriculum.
- Confident delivering English and/or Maths at Key Stage 4.

- Skilled at motivating anxious learners.
- Able to build strong relationships through consistency and encouragement.
- Passionate about helping students reconnect with education and achieve ambitious goals.
There is no preference regarding tutor gender. Experience, subject knowledge and the ability to inspire confidence are the family's priorities.

Location:
Home and occasional community-based tuition in Rushton Spencer, Staffordshire Moorlands (SK11).
Please note the family live in a rural location, so a full driving licence and access to your own vehicle are essential.
