Hours: 37 hours per week
Employment: Permanent
About the role
We are an established and growing bookkeeping practice supporting around 50 clients across a range of industries.
We are looking for an experienced Bookkeeping Manager to join our team and take responsibility for both client work and the day-to-day management of our bookkeeping team.
This is a hands-on management role. You will continue to manage your own portfolio of clients and carry out bookkeeping work, while also becoming the first point of contact for the team, overseeing workflow, reviewing work and helping develop our people.
This is an opportunity for someone who wants more responsibility and influence than a standard bookkeeping role offers, without moving completely away from client work.
What you’ll be responsible for
Client work
- Manage a portfolio of bookkeeping clients.
- Complete accurate bookkeeping and month-end work.
- Work confidently with Xero, Quickbooks, Sage and other cloud accounting software.
- Deal directly with clients and resolve routine queries.
- Identify issues and escalate more complex matters appropriately.
- Ensure client work is completed accurately and on time.
Team management
- Allocate work across the bookkeeping team.
- Monitor deadlines, workload and capacity.
- Review work and identify errors or training requirements.
- Provide technical support to less experienced team members.
- Help train and develop the team.
- Act as the first point of escalation when team members encounter problems.
- Address day-to-day performance and workflow issues.
- Ensure our processes and standards are followed.
Supporting the business
- Help improve our systems and processes.
- Identify opportunities to make the business more efficient.
- Help us manage growth without compromising quality.
- Keep the business owner informed of important issues, but take ownership of routine decisions yourself.
What we’re looking for
You will need to be an experienced qualified bookkeeper with enough technical knowledge and confidence to work independently.
More importantly, we’re looking for someone who takes responsibility.
You should be someone who:
- Has strong bookkeeping experience.
- Is confident working independently.
- Has experience using Xero, Quickbooks & Sage.
- Is comfortable dealing directly with clients.
- Has an excellent eye for detail.
- Can manage competing deadlines.
- Is organised and able to prioritise effectively.
- Can review other people’s work constructively.
- Enjoys helping less experienced colleagues develop.
- Is comfortable making decisions rather than constantly looking for someone else to make them.
- Can identify a problem, consider the options and take appropriate action.
Previous experience supervising or managing bookkeeping staff would be highly desirable.
A bookkeeping or accounting qualification would also be advantageous, although relevant experience and technical ability are more important to us than qualifications alone.
What makes this role different?
This isn’t a role where you will spend all day managing people and attending meetings.
You will remain hands-on with clients, while having genuine responsibility for how the team operates.
Equally, this isn’t simply a senior bookkeeper role with a management title.
We want someone who can grow into a position where the team relies on them for day-to-day guidance and the business owner can genuinely delegate responsibility.
The successful candidate will have the opportunity to help shape how the practice develops as we continue to grow.
The person we’re looking for
The right person will probably be someone who has reached the point in their career where they are thinking:
“I’m capable of more than just processing accounts, but I still enjoy bookkeeping and working with clients.”
If that sounds like you, we’d like to hear from you.
What we offer -
- 37-hour working week
- Permanent position
- A varied role combining client work and management
- Genuine responsibility and autonomy
- Opportunity to help shape the development of a growing practice
- Supportive working environment
- The opportunity to develop the role as the business grows
How to apply
Please send your CV along with a brief explanation of why you are interested in the role and what you could bring to it.
We are particularly interested in hearing about your experience managing clients, reviewing other people’s bookkeeping and taking responsibility for a team.
Please note: This is a hands-on bookkeeping management position. Applicants should be comfortable continuing to undertake client bookkeeping work alongside their management responsibilities.
