Overview The Operations Team Leader oversees day-to-day site operations, ensuring safe, efficient workflows, clear communication, and high service standards. This role leads a frontline team, coordinates load-outs/returns, and enforces full PPE and Health & Safety compliance at all times.
Key Responsibilities
- Team leadership and coordination
- Lead, coach, and schedule the operations team to meet daily targets and service levels.
- Allocate tasks, set priorities, and monitor progress throughout the day.
- Conduct start-of-shift briefs and end-of-shift debriefs; update plans as conditions change.
- Health, Safety, and Compliance
- Ensure all staff adhere to Health & Safety policies, safe systems of work, and site rules at all times.
- Enforce full PPE requirements; perform spot checks and correct non-compliance immediately.
- Carry out toolbox talks, risk assessments (as trained), and incident/near-miss reporting.
- Maintain a clean, organised, and hazard-free working environment.
- Communication and Stakeholder Management
- Communicate clearly with staff through the day via briefings, radio, and face-to-face updates.
- Liaise with drivers, warehouse, planning, and customer service to resolve issues quickly.
- Provide timely updates on progress, delays, and any operational risks.
- Load-Outs and Returns
- Be on site for all load-outs to supervise accuracy, loading safety, and departure readiness.
- Be present when drivers arrive back to conduct debriefs, capture feedback, and log defects, shortages, or damages.
- Verify documentation (manifests, delivery notes) and ensure system records are updated.
- Quality, Productivity, and Continuous Improvement
- Monitor KPIs (on-time dispatch/return, pick accuracy, turnaround time) and drive performance.
- Identify bottlenecks and implement practical improvements to workflows and layouts.
- Support training and upskilling to build a flexible, multi-skilled team.
- Equipment and Housekeeping
- Ensure equipment is used safely, pre-use checks are completed, and defects are reported.
- Coordinate with maintenance for timely repairs and servicing.
- Uphold 5S/housekeeping standards across operational areas.
Requirements
- Proven experience in operations, logistics, warehouse, or field services; prior team-leading experience preferred.
- Strong knowledge of Health & Safety practices and PPE standards; IOSH/NEBOSH (or willingness to attain) is an advantage.
- Confident communicator with the ability to brief, coach, and challenge constructively.
- Organised, calm under pressure, and solution-focused with sound judgment.
- Competent with operational systems (WMS/TMS) and basic Microsoft Office/Google Workspace.
- Physically able to work on the shop floor and support manual tasks as needed.
- Flexibility to work shifts, including early starts, late finishes, and weekends as required.
