Post: Gallery and Events Casual Assistant

Salary: £12.21 per hour
Summary:
As a member of the MK Gallery team, you will help ensure smooth daily operations and deliver an exceptional visitor experience. Your role includes welcoming visitors to exhibitions, the café, and events, while upholding high standards of presentation, safety, and customer service. You will also assist in preparing and securing the building, with some physical tasks such as moving and lifting furniture and equipment.
Main duties and responsibilities
Visitor & Customer Services
· Ensure the venue and café are presented to an excellent standard through regular checks, cleaning, and maintenance reporting.
· Be the lead contact for the Gallery’s team of volunteers and support other customer service areas when busy.
· Deliver a high level of customer service across all public-facing areas, including the café, gallery, cinema and events.
· Maintain exhibitions to a high standard, reporting feedback or issues to the Head of Exhibitions.
· Possess strong product knowledge to upsell effectively and respond to customer queries.
Operations & Facilities
· Responsible for opening and closing the building and café, including operation of intruder alarm systems.
· Act as a keyholder and point of contact for fire and intruder alarm systems.
· Lead building evacuation procedures and act as Duty Fire Officer and First Aider.
· Monitor fire exit routes and ensure compliance with Health & Safety, Food Safety, and security policies.
· Assist with set-up and take-down for public programme events, hires, and cinema screenings.
· Support the Head Chef with prep and service for large-scale events.
· Maintain awareness of and act upon the Events Diary, Function Sheets, and planning documents.
Financial Responsibility
· Handle cash and card transactions in line with Gallery procedures.
· Oversee café closing procedures, including end-of-day reporting for tills and card readers.
· Report performance data to the Head of Commercial Services.
· Identify and report damage, faults, or operational hazards to the Facilities Manager.
General
· Promote a culture of environmental responsibility and sound practices.
· Undertake any other duties reasonably required by the House Manager or Head of Commercial Services.
· Work collaboratively with colleagues to maintain a positive team culture and support effective teamwork across all departments.
· Carry out responsibilities with due regard to MK Gallery’s policies on Security, Health & Safety, Child Protection, and Equality & Diversity.
Person Specification:
Essential Skills
· Excellent customer care skills.
· Deliver high standards with attention to detail.
· Experience of providing catering or hospitality services
· Excellent interpersonal skills
· Able to work on own initiative as well as of part of a team.
· Reliable and committed.
· Flexible and willing to work at peak times including weekends, bank holidays and late evenings.
· Experience of cash and stock handling
· A good standard of education, with numeracy, literacy and IT skill.
Desirable
· Fire Warden training.
· Qualified first-aider.
· Basic food hygiene level 2
