NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (NHSGGC) is one of the largest healthcare systems in the United Kingdom, employing approximately 40,000 staff across a wide range of clinical and non-clinical professions and roles. We deliver acute hospital, primary, community and mental health services to a population of over 1.15 million people, and to a wider population of 2.2 million when regional and national services are included.
The role:
The post holder will be part of NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde’s Prison Health Care Health Improvement Team and will be responsible for the delivery and ongoing development of Alcohol and Drug Harm Reduction service currently being delivered in the prisons in Greater Glasgow and Clyde.
The post holder will deliver a range of health-related trainings to people living in prison through structured sessions on either a one to one or group basis. The post holder will be required to support the promotion of the full suite of programmes delivered by the Prison Health Improvement Team including, Harm reduction, Peer Mentor support, Quit Your Way cessation services and Mouth Matters Oral Health Improvement service. The post holder will also be required to support the delivery of any other relevant topics identified by service management. Applicants should be able to demonstrate experience working with people who use substances or have experience working within a custodial environment.
The post holder will be expected to operate as part of an extensive multi-disciplinary team delivering a series of Harm Reduction messages including but not limited to Blood Borne Virus and Alcohol and Drugs. We would expect you to establish and maintain strong and effective partnerships with key partner organisations (e.g. ADRS, SDF, voluntary sector and recovery communities) and other Health Improvement staff who can influence and deliver the Health Improvement and Inequalities work streams. The post will be primarily based within HMP Barlinnie but there will be a requirement to work across all 4 prison sites in Greater Glasgow & Clyde health board area.
Candidates shortlisted for interview will also be invited to attend an information session at HMP Barlinnie. Attendance at the information session is required to support moving to a face to face interview. The post requires good organisational skills and the ability to work autonomously. The post holder should have comprehensive knowledge and experience in using Microsoft Office Packages and have a good command of verbal and written English.
Duration, Location, and Working Pattern:
This post is fixed term until March 2027, based at HMP Barlinnie.
The post is 36 hours with a shift pattern between Monday - Friday 8.00am - 4.00pm. The post holder may be required to work out with these times to meet the exigencies of the service
Key responsibilities:
1. Responsible for implementation of Health Improvement programmes and support to key partners and Partnership / HSCP / Acute staff increasing capacity in organisations, communities and individuals to improve health and reduce inequalities in health through evidencebased interventions.
2. Enable health improvement work streams to be delivered in partnership with others through participating in working groups and influencing forums/networks. Develop, co-ordinate and implement health improvement work areas across Partnerships / HSCP’s.
3. Establish and maintain strong and effective partnerships with key partner organisations (e.g. ADRS, SDF, voluntary sector and recovery communities) and other Health Improvement staff who can influence and deliver the Health Improvement and Inequalities work streams.
4. Contribute to effective monitoring and evaluation of Health Improvement work streams.
5. Provide a range of training for staff in areas of health improvement / public health
6. Adhere to the implementation of community engagement standards working closely with relevant community networks to build community capacity to tackle health issues and influence health improvement practice.
7. Ensure quality in the design and delivery of resource materials and health improvement training programmes for a wide variety of audiences including youth health, third sector and voluntary organisations.
8. Take responsibility for organisation and delivery of own work plan.
9. Keep abreast of public health policy and practice through continuous personal development working towards practitioner health improvement / public health competencies.
