We are currently recruiting an experienced B5/B6 Speech & Language Therapist (SALT) for an ongoing position at a school for young people with complex medical requirements and associated disabilities
About the Role
We are looking for an experienced, enthusiastic and compassionate Speech & Language Therapist with previous experience working with children and young people, ideally within a busy school, specialist education or SEND environment.
The successful candidate will work closely with pupils who have a range of speech, language, communication and complex needs, helping them to maximise their communication, independence and participation in school life.
You will work collaboratively with teachers, teaching assistants, parents/carers and other members of the multidisciplinary team to ensure therapy is fully integrated into each pupil’s educational and care programme.
Key Duties & Responsibilities
- Completing comprehensive speech, language and communication assessments
- Assessing pupils with a range of complex communication needs
- Developing and implementing individualised therapy programmes
- Delivering both 1:1 and group therapy sessions
- Supporting children and young people with speech, language and communication needs (SLCN)
- Supporting pupils with SEND, physical disabilities and complex needs
- Assessing and supporting pupils with eating, drinking and swallowing difficulties (dysphagia) where appropriately trained and competent
- Developing and reviewing communication passports, therapy plans and individual programmes
- Supporting pupils who use AAC – Augmentative and Alternative Communication
- Working with communication aids, symbols, switches and other appropriate communication systems
- Supporting pupils to develop their receptive and expressive language skills
- Supporting social communication, interaction and functional communication
- Setting appropriate therapy goals and regularly reviewing pupils’ progress and outcomes
- Contributing to EHCPs, annual reviews and multidisciplinary assessments
- Producing clear and accurate clinical reports, assessments and progress notes
- Maintaining accurate and confidential clinical records
- Working closely with teachers and teaching assistants to embed communication strategies throughout the school day
- Providing advice, strategies and programmes for school staff to implement between therapy sessions
- Providing appropriate training and guidance to school staff
- Liaising with parents and carers regarding pupils’ communication and therapy needs
- Working collaboratively with Occupational Therapists, Physiotherapists, Nurses, Teachers, Educational Psychologists and other professionals
- Attending and contributing to multidisciplinary team meetings
- Supporting transition planning for pupils where required
- Promoting a communication-friendly environment across the school
- Monitoring outcomes and adapting interventions according to pupils’ changing needs
- Following appropriate safeguarding procedures and escalating concerns where necessary
- Ensuring practice is evidence-based and in line with relevant professional and school policies
Essential Requirements
✅ Qualified Speech & Language Therapist
✅ Current HCPC registration
✅ Previous experience working with children and young people
✅ Experience working within a busy school, specialist education or SEND environment
✅ Experience supporting pupils with complex communication needs
✅ Knowledge and experience of AAC/alternative communication methods
✅ Strong assessment, treatment planning and report-writing skills
✅ Good understanding of EHCPs and multidisciplinary working
✅ Strong knowledge of safeguarding children and young people
✅ Ability to manage a busy caseload and work both independently and as part of an MDT
✅ Excellent communication and organisational skills
✅ Full UK driving licence and access to a car
Experience with dysphagia/eating, drinking and swallowing needs would be highly desirable.
