Autism Teaching Assistant
Sense Education is looking for a caring and enthusiastic Autism Teaching Assistant to join a specialist secondary school in Bury, supporting young people aged 11-16 with autism and social, language and communication needs.
This is a school where every student is encouraged to discover what they can achieve, build confidence and develop the skills they’ll need for life beyond the classroom. With small classes, consistent routines and a curriculum that combines academic learning with communication, emotional regulation, life skills and community-based experiences, pupils are given the space and support to grow in their own way.
About the role
As an Autism Teaching Assistant, you’ll be someone who genuinely enjoys getting to know young people and understanding what makes them tick. You’ll provide encouragement throughout the school day, helping pupils access their learning, manage emotions, develop independence and celebrate those moments that might seem small to others but mean the world to them.
You’ll work alongside teaching staff and other professionals to create a calm, predictable environment where pupils feel understood and able to take part. No two days will look the same and the relationships you build will be at the heart of your role.
We’re looking for someone who:
· Has experience supporting children or young people with autism and/or additional needs
· Understands that communication looks different for every individual
· Can remain patient and reassuring when situations become challenging
· Is confident encouraging independence rather than simply doing things for pupils
· Enjoys building genuine, trusting relationships with young people
· Can follow routines while adapting their approach to individual needs
· Brings warmth, humour and a positive attitude into the classroom
Qualifications & Requirements
· Minimum qualifications required – A recognised Teaching Assistant qualification or a background in education or care (NVQ, CACHE, Degree or equivalent)
· Experience supporting children with SEND
· Passionate working with young children or adults with disabilities
Working Hours
Monday – Friday
8.30am – 3.30pm
Term – time only

Role Type: Full Time/ Part Time/ Temp - Perm
Pay Rate: £14.60 - £16.90 per hour

Safeguarding children is an integral part of what we do and we have a stringent safer recruitment process. We undertake checks on all the candidates we work with. As such we require a current Enhanced DBS Disclosure for everyone working in Schools. If you do not have a subscription to the DBS Update Service, you may be required to complete a new DBS application as part of the registration process. If you take a temporary role with Sense Education you will be paid on a weekly basis. All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position but long term. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
Pay: £14.60-£16.90 per hour
