About the Role
We are seeking a motivated and technically capable Commissioning / Protection Engineer to join our growing Power Systems team. This role is primarily based at our dedicated test facility, where you will be responsible for the development, configuration, testing, validation, and commissioning support of high-voltage protection and control solutions ranging from 33kV to 400kV transmission and distribution networks.
You will play a key role in ensuring the reliability, security, and performance of protection systems before deployment to customer sites. While the majority of work is carried out at our test facility, occasional travel and working away from home (Monday to Friday) will be required to support commissioning activities, factory acceptance tests, site acceptance tests, and customer projects.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop, configure, test, and commission protection and control schemes for high-voltage power systems.
- Perform functional testing and validation of protection relays and associated control systems.
- Design, implement, and verify:
- Feeder Protection Schemes
- Transformer Protection Schemes
- Busbar Protection Systems
- Operational Tripping Schemes
- Load Management and Load Shedding Solutions
- Carry out fault analysis and protection coordination studies where required.
- Produce and maintain technical documentation, test procedures, commissioning records, and test reports.
- Support and lead Factory Acceptance Tests (FATs) and Site Acceptance Tests (SATs).
- Assist with installation checks, fault finding, commissioning, and troubleshooting activities.
- Collaborate with engineering and project teams to ensure successful project delivery.
- Ensure compliance with relevant industry standards, safety requirements, and company procedures.
Requirements
Essential
- Degree, HNC/HND, or equivalent qualification in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems Engineering, or a related discipline.
- Knowledge of power system protection principles and high-voltage networks.
- Understanding of protection schemes for transmission and distribution systems up to 400kV.
- Ability to interpret electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and protection drawings.
- Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
- Full UK driving licence.
- Willingness to travel and work away from home when project requirements dictate.
Desirable
- Experience with protection relays from Siemens, GE Vernova, ABB/Hitachi Energy, Schneider Electric, or similar manufacturers.
- Previous experience in protection testing, commissioning, or protection system design.
- Familiarity with IEC 61850 communications and substation automation systems.
- Experience within transmission, distribution, renewable energy, or industrial power sectors.
- Knowledge of National Grid and DNO protection philosophies and standards
Working Pattern
- Primarily based at the company test facility.
- Standard Monday to Friday working week.
- Occasional travel and working away from home (Monday to Friday) required to support commissioning and project activities.

Pay: £40,000.00-£50,000.00 per year
