Male Carer / Personal Assistant – Private Household

About the Role
We are looking for a kind, patient and experienced Male Carer / Personal Assistant to provide dedicated one-to-one care and companionship to an elderly male family member who is living with Parkinson’s.
This is a private household position and we are looking for someone who can build a warm, trusting and respectful relationship with him while supporting his day-to-day needs, comfort and independence.
The individual does not speak English, so the successful candidate must be able to communicate fluently in either Urdu or Gujarati. This is an essential requirement of the role so that he can communicate his needs, understand instructions and feel comfortable and reassured in his own home.
The usual working hours will be 8:00am to 4:00pm, with some flexibility required for occasional overnight care when needed.
Key Responsibilities
- Providing dedicated one-to-one care and support throughout the day.
- Assisting with personal care, washing, dressing and toileting where required.
- Supporting mobility safely around the home and when outside.
- Assisting with transfers, walking and movement as necessary.
- Helping him maintain as much independence as possible.
- Providing companionship, conversation and reassurance.
- Communicating with him in Urdu or Gujarati throughout the day.
- Accompanying him on walks, outings, family activities and appointments where required.
- Preparing or assisting with light meals, drinks and refreshments.
- Providing medication reminders and helping to ensure established medication routines are followed.
- Supporting any prescribed mobility, exercise or physiotherapy routines in accordance with professional guidance.
- Monitoring his general wellbeing and recognising any changes in mobility, behaviour, appetite or condition.
- Communicating any concerns or changes promptly to the family.
- Helping to maintain a safe, calm and comfortable environment.
- Providing additional support during periods when Parkinson’s symptoms are more pronounced.
- Providing occasional overnight care by prior arrangement.
Essential Requirements
The successful candidate must:
- Be male, due to the personal and intimate care requirements of the individual.
- Be able to speak fluent Urdu or Gujarati.
- Be caring, patient and compassionate.
- Be respectful of privacy, dignity and personal boundaries.
- Be reliable, punctual and trustworthy.
- Be calm and confident when assisting someone with reduced mobility.
- Be comfortable working independently within a private family home.
- Be able to develop a friendly but professional relationship with the individual and his family.
- Be observant and able to recognise when additional assistance or support may be needed.
- Be flexible regarding occasional overnight care.
Experience
Previous experience as a carer, personal assistant, support worker or healthcare assistant is strongly preferred.
Experience supporting an elderly person with Parkinson’s disease, reduced mobility or another neurological condition would be particularly desirable.
Relevant care qualifications are welcomed, although we will also consider candidates with strong practical experience and the right personal qualities.
The successful candidate will be required to provide satisfactory references and complete the appropriate DBS checks for the role.
A full UK driving licence would be advantageous.
Male Occupational Requirement
This role involves providing personal and intimate care to an elderly male within his private home.
For reasons of privacy, dignity and personal care, the position requires a male carer. This requirement is intended to constitute an occupational requirement under Schedule 9, Part 1 of the Equality Act 2010.
Language Requirement
The individual receiving care does not speak English.
The ability to speak Urdu or Gujarati is therefore an essential requirement of the position, rather than simply a preference, as the carer must be able to communicate effectively with him regarding his care, wellbeing, personal needs and safety.

Pay: £12.71-£15.50 per hour
