We’re growing and looking for an experienced Semi-Senior Accountant to join our team at Cooper Accounting.
Right now, we need someone who is at their best when they're getting accounts completed.
If you're the type of accountant who enjoys sitting down with a set of records, working through the job, resolving the issues and getting a good set of accounts over the line, this could be a great fit.
We're not necessarily looking for someone who wants to spend their whole day in meetings or managing people. We need someone who enjoys producing work and takes pride in getting jobs completed accurately and efficiently.
The role
Your initial focus will be predominantly accounts production, including:
- Preparing year-end accounts for limited companies and sole traders
- Preparing Corporation Tax returns
- Preparing Self Assessment tax returns
- Working through client records and identifying and resolving queries
- Reviewing bookkeeping and trial balances before accounts preparation
- Preparing year-end adjustments
- Using Xero and accounts production/tax software
- Producing accurate, good-quality work ready for review
- Managing your workload and completing jobs within agreed deadlines
- Spotting when something doesn't look right and investigating or raising the query
There will be opportunities to get involved in other areas as the role develops.
If you enjoy client contact, we're also happy for you to take ownership of your own clients and build those relationships. Equally, if the accounts production side is what you enjoy most, we're happy for that to remain a significant part of your role.
What we're looking for
A minimum of 2 years' experience in a similar role within a UK accountancy practice is essential.
We're looking for someone who can join us with a good level of practical experience and start producing work without needing to be taught accounts preparation from scratch.
You'll need:
- 2+ years' experience in a similar role within a UK accountancy practice
- Strong practical accounts preparation experience
- Experience preparing limited company and sole trader accounts
- Good working knowledge of Corporation Tax and Self Assessment
- Ability to prepare accounts with a reasonable level of independence
- Good attention to detail
- Ability to manage your own workload and deadlines
- A practical, proactive approach to getting work completed
Experience using Xero would be particularly useful.
You may be AAT qualified, part-qualified ACCA/ACA or qualified by experience. We're much more interested in your practical ability, experience and attitude than the letters after your name.
Unfortunately, we won't be able to progress applications from candidates who don't have the required UK accountancy practice experience.
Salary & benefits
£30,000–£35,000 per year, depending on experience
Alongside your salary, we offer:
- Extra holiday entitlement – because time away from work matters too
- Private health insurance
- Free on-site parking
- Flexible working hours
- Hybrid working option – work from home 1–2 days per week if you prefer
- Career progression opportunities as the practice continues to grow
- Support for your professional development and qualifications
- Regular team socials and events
- A relaxed, friendly team and working environment
- Modern office and breakout/social spaces
- Varied portfolio of owner-managed businesses
- Opportunity to take ownership of your own clients if that's something you'd like to develop
Where you'll work
This is primarily an office-based role at our Elland, West Yorkshire office, so you'll need to live within a reasonable commuting distance.
Once you're settled into the role, there is the option to work from home 1–2 days per week if preferred.
We also offer flexible working hours, because we recognise that everyone has commitments outside work and a rigid 9–5 doesn't suit everybody.
What's it like working here?
We're a growing, modern accountancy practice, but we're still a relatively small team.
That means you'll know everyone you work with, have a voice in the business and won't feel like another number in a huge accounts department.
We work hard and care about getting things right for our clients, but we also want a relaxed, friendly environment where people enjoy coming to work.
Our Elland office includes breakout and social spaces, a podcast area, pool table, darts, coffee facilities and a small gym area – and we enjoy getting the team together for socials outside work too.
There's also plenty of opportunity to grow with us. Whether you want to develop technically, gain further qualifications, take ownership of clients or eventually progress into a more senior position, we'll support you in getting there.
Interested?
If you're currently working within a UK accountancy practice, have at least 2 years' relevant experience and accounts production is a part of the job you genuinely enjoy, we'd love to hear from you.
Send us your CV along with a short introduction about your current role and experience.
Please note: this isn't a fully remote position. Applicants must be able to regularly work from our Elland office.
