30,000 per year + tips
40-hour contract
The Salt Barge – Marston
About the Role
The Salt Barge is an independent countryside pub set beside the canal in Marston, with a brand-new purpose-built kitchen, a new food offering and a strong focus on proper, freshly cooked pub food.
We are looking for a motivated Sous Chef to join our kitchen team and work closely with the Head Chef as we continue to build and develop our food operation.
This would be a great opportunity for an experienced Chef de Partie ready to take the next step, or a newer Sous Chef looking to gain more responsibility, develop their skills and learn more about running a fresh-food kitchen.
Around 95% of our menu is prepared fresh in-house, using local and quality produce wherever possible. We want chefs who enjoy cooking properly rather than opening packets and relying on microwaves.
You will be working with food such as:
- Freshly made pies and pie fillings
- House-made stocks, sauces and gravies
- Freshly cooked Sunday roast potatoes
- Homemade Yorkshire puddings
- Fresh meat and fish dishes
- Proper pub classics
- Seasonal specials
- Freshly prepared vegetables and sides
- Homemade desserts and traditional puddings
We do not operate a microwave-led kitchen. Our focus is on teaching and maintaining proper cooking techniques while producing honest, fresh pub food that customers want to come back for.
What You’ll Be Doing
- Supporting the Head Chef with the day-to-day running of the kitchen
- Preparing and cooking fresh dishes to a consistently high standard
- Helping organise and lead the kitchen during busy services
- Supervising and supporting junior chefs and kitchen staff
- Maintaining excellent food hygiene, cleanliness and food safety standards
- Helping with prep levels, ordering, stock rotation and reducing waste
- Ensuring dishes leave the kitchen quickly, consistently and well presented
- Helping develop specials and seasonal menu ideas
- Working closely with the front-of-house team to deliver a smooth service
- Taking responsibility for the kitchen when the Head Chef is away
- Learning more about kitchen management, food costing, stock control and GP
Who We’re Looking For
We would love to hear from chefs who are passionate about food and want to continue developing their career.
You may already be working as a Sous Chef, or you may be a strong Chef de Partie looking for your first Sous Chef position.
You should ideally have:
- Experience working in a busy fresh-food kitchen
- Good basic cooking skills and a willingness to learn
- Confidence working across different sections of a kitchen
- A genuine interest in fresh, homemade food
- Good organisation and time-management skills
- An understanding of food hygiene and kitchen safety
- A positive attitude and willingness to support the rest of the team
- The ability to stay calm and organised during busy services
- Pride in the food you send out
Formal qualifications are welcome but are not essential if you have the right experience, attitude and passion for cooking.
Why Join The Salt Barge?
This is not a role where you will spend every day reheating bought-in food.
You will have the opportunity to cook, learn and develop in a brand-new professional kitchen, working with fresh ingredients and learning how a proper pub kitchen operates.
For someone looking to progress their career, there will be opportunities to develop skills in:
- Fresh food preparation
- Stocks, sauces and gravies
- Meat and fish cookery
- Pie making
- Sunday roast preparation
- Traditional British puddings
- Menu development
- Food costing and GP
- Ordering and stock management
- Kitchen leadership and team management
We want to build a kitchen team that takes pride in what it produces and enjoys working together.
If you are a CDP looking to make the step up, or a Sous Chef who wants to work somewhere focused on fresh food rather than microwaves and bought-in meals, we would love to hear from you.
