Role Overview
The Head Mechanic provides technical leadership within the workshop, ensuring the safe and efficient maintenance of Beryl's fleet while coordinating day-to-day operations to maximize vehicle availability. Working with the Depot Lead, they mentor the mechanic team and act as the primary technical authority to drive quality standards and process improvements.
The Head Mechanic acts as the technical authority within the depot, identifying recurring issues, improving workshop processes and ensuring consistent standards across all maintenance activities.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead day-to-day workshop operations, prioritizing repairs and servicing to meet fleet availability targets.
- Provide hands-on technical expertise and serve as the escalation point for complex mechanical issues.
- Oversee quality control by performing regular inspections and coaching the team on Beryl standards.
- Manage workshop resources, including tools, equipment, and parts inventory accuracy.
- Champion Health & Safety compliance, ensuring a safe working environment and proper equipment use.
- Support team development through practical training, onboarding, and performance guidance.
- Identify recurring technical issues and collaborate with engineering for continuous improvement.
- Maintain an up-to-date knowledge of vehicle specifications, tooling and repair procedures.
- Provide day-to-day leadership and technical guidance to Mechanics.
- Assist the Depot Lead with identifying training needs and development opportunities.
- Work closely with the On-Street Operations team to align workshop output with operational demand.
- Provide operational support to the workshop and assume the duties of the Depot Lead during their leave of absence
Health & Safety
- Lead by example in maintaining a safe workshop environment.
- Ensure all workshop activities comply with Beryl Health & Safety procedures.
- Challenge unsafe working practices and escalate concerns where appropriate.
- Support Toolbox Talks and promote safe working behaviours.
Requirements & Qualifications
Essential:
- Significant experience in mechanical/engineering workshops with supervisory or leadership background.
- Outstanding diagnostic skills across bikes, e-bikes, and e-scooters with a commitment to quality.
- Strong planning, prioritisation, and communication skills within operational environments.
- Deep understanding of workshop Health & Safety requirements.
- Proven ability in training, coaching, and managing performance against technical KPIs.

Please note, this position is shift-based with the working week running Monday to Sunday.
