Job Overview
We are seeking a compassionate, experienced and proactive Night Senior Carer to join our care team. This role combines hands-on care delivery with leadership responsibilities during the night, supporting residents and care staff to ensure high-quality, person-centred care at all times. The successful candidate will lead by example, promote dignity and independence, oversee safe care practices, and act as a key link between residents, families, staff and management.

Key Responsibilities
Care & Service User Support
- Provide high-quality personal care, including bathing, dressing, mobility support, continence care, oral hygiene and meal assistance.
- Support residents with medication administration in line with company policies and procedures.
- Monitor residents’ wellbeing throughout the night and promptly report, record any changes, seek medical advice for any changes where necessary.
- Write, review and update person-centered, digital care plans and risk assessments in line with individual needs and CQC requirements.
- Ensure care plans, daily records and documentation are accurate, up to date and completed in a timely manner.
- Promote dignity, choice, independence, infection control and safeguarding at all times.
- Maintain residents’ comfort, safety and wellbeing throughout the night, in line with residents wishes and preferences.
Night Leadership & Staff Supervision
- Lead and supervise carers during night shifts.
- Take charge of the night shift when required or in the absence of management.
- Work independently and use initiative while ensuring appropriate escalation of concerns.
- Support staff induction, shadowing and ongoing guidance.
- Promote teamwork, equality, diversity and positive working relationships.
- Participate in staff meetings and support supervision processes.
- Ensure effective communication and clear handovers to the incoming day team.
Communication & Family Liaison
- Act as a key point of contact for residents, families, visitors and professionals.
- Provide appropriate care updates to families while maintaining confidentiality.
- Handle phone calls, messages and concerns professionally.
- Escalate clinical, safeguarding or medical concerns to the Registered Manager or Team Leader.
- Provide clear and accurate information during shift handovers.
Compliance, Quality & Safety
- Ensure care delivery meets CQC regulations and company policies.
- Use the QCS app to remain informed on safeguarding, infection control, mental capacity and best practice.
- Support audits, health and safety checks and incident reporting.
- Ensure all accidents, incidents and communications are documented accurately.
- Respond calmly and appropriately to emergencies and unexpected situations.
- Maintain high standards of safeguarding, confidentiality, health and safety and infection control.
Night Operations & Resident Support
- Oversee daily records and ensure completion before the end of the shift.
- Monitor residents during the night and identify changes in health, behaviour or presentation.
- Report operational concerns such as staffing, maintenance, supplies and safety issues.
- Assist with light domestic duties, laundry, meal preparation and refreshments where required.
- Support resident activities, entertainment and engagement programmes where applicable.
- Assist residents with shopping, finances, transport, appointments and pet care where required.
- Prioritise tasks effectively and ensure essential care duties are completed with minimal supervision.
Working Pattern
Night shifts, including weekends, according to the agreed rota and staffing requirements.
Essential Requirements
- NVQ Level 3 in Health & Social Care (or equivalent).
- Good written and spoken English.
- Previous experience working in a care setting.
- Experience supervising or supporting staff.
- Sound knowledge and experience in writing, reviewing and maintaining person-centred care plans and documentation.
- Knowledge of risk assessments and record keeping.
- Ability to administer medication (training provided if required).
- Strong leadership, communication and organisational skills.
- Ability to work independently and use initiative during night shifts.
- Ability to recognise, respond to and report changes in residents’ health or behaviour.
- Ability to remain alert, attentive and professional throughout the night.
Desirable
- Supervisory or management qualification.
- Experience in a Senior or Lead Carer role.
- Experience working night shifts in a care setting.
- Knowledge of rota planning and audits.
- Interest in becoming a champion in areas such as safeguarding, medication management, dignity, infection control or mental capacity.
