Role Summary
The Caretaker will support the day-to-day operation of the leisure facility at Edge Hall Road by ensuring that the building, grounds, equipment and customer areas are well maintained, safe, clean and ready for use. The postholder will carry out routine checks, minor maintenance, cleaning, room and activity set-ups, security duties and basic customer support, working closely with the Facility Manager, Facility Officers and Cleaners to maintain high standards across the site.
Key responsibilities and duties:
- Open and close the facility as required, including securing doors, gates, windows, alarms and key-holder responsibilities where authorised.
- Carry out regular internal and external checks of the building, sports areas, changing rooms, toilets, corridors, plant areas, car parks and grounds.
- Maintain a clean, tidy and welcoming environment by completing routine cleaning tasks and responding promptly to spillages, litter, hazards or hygiene issues.
- Set up, dismantle, move and store equipment safely for sports sessions, classes, events, meetings, parties and community activities.
- Undertake basic maintenance and minor repairs within competence, including reporting defects, hazards, damage or equipment failures to the appropriate manager.
- Support health and safety compliance by completing checklists, risk-control routines, fire exit checks and other records accurately and on time.
- Ensure equipment and facilities are used safely and in line with site procedures, escalating concerns where necessary.
- Assist with deliveries, stock movement, waste disposal, recycling and safe storage of materials and supplies.
- Provide polite and helpful support to customers, hirers, clubs, contractors and visitors, signposting queries to the appropriate member of staff where needed.
- Carry out routine grounds maintenance to ensure all external areas are safe, clean, and well-presented, including grass cutting, hedge trimming, weeding, litter picking, leaf clearance, and maintaining pathways, car parks, and landscaped areas.
- Undertake a range of general maintenance duties, including painting and decorating, carrying out minor electrical repairs and completing general DIY tasks to ensure the buildings, facilities, and equipment are maintained to a safe and high standard.
Person Specification:
(Essential)
- Experience of cleaning, caretaking, facilities support, maintenance or a similar practical role.
- Ability to carry out routine checks, basic maintenance tasks and safe manual handling duties.
- Good awareness of health and safety, safe working practices and hazard reporting.
- Reliable, punctual and able to work independently as well as part of a team.
- Good communication skills and a positive, customer - focussed approach.
(Desirable)
- Experience working in a leisure centre, sports facility, school, community venue or public-facing environment.
- Basic trade skills, such as painting, joinery, plumbing awareness or general repairs.
- Training in first aid, fire safety, COSHH, safeguarding or manual handling.
- Previous key holder or site security experience.
- Understanding of leisure facility operations, events set-up or sports equipment handling.
