Functional Skills Tutor – Alternative Provision (1:1 SEND Support)
Location: Stafford Library, Stafford
Schedule: Monday, Wednesday & Thursday
Hours: 2:30pm – 4:30pm
Pay: Competitive hourly rate (dependent on experience)

We are seeking a calm, patient, and emotionally aware Functional Skills Tutor to support a Year 11 learner with an EHCP on a 1:1 basis within a community-based setting in Stafford Library.
This role is ideal for tutors with experience supporting young people with Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC), SEMH needs, anxiety-based school avoidance, and communication difficulties. The learner has become disengaged from mainstream education and requires a highly relational, low-pressure approach focused on rebuilding confidence, emotional safety, and readiness for post-16 pathways.
The successful tutor will deliver Functional Skills English and Maths sessions alongside mentoring and confidence-building support. Sessions should feel structured, calm, predictable, and supportive, with a strong emphasis on relationship-building before academic challenge.
The Ideal Tutor Will:
- Have experience working with SEND, SEMH, ASC, or alternative provision learners
- Be confident delivering Functional Skills English and Maths
- Understand anxiety-based school avoidance and emotionally safe practice
- Be calm, patient, and able to build trust gradually
- Use structured and differentiated learning approaches
- Be reliable, consistent, and able to maintain professional boundaries
- Be comfortable delivering sessions in a community setting such as a library
Key Responsibilities:
- Deliver 1:1 Functional Skills tuition and mentoring
- Support engagement and emotional regulation throughout sessions
- Adapt teaching methods to suit communication and processing needs
- Create manageable, low-pressure learning activities
- Provide encouragement, reassurance, and positive reinforcement
- Monitor progress and provide brief session feedback where required
Essential Requirements:
- Enhanced DBS on the Update Service (or willingness to obtain one)
- Experience working with children or young people with additional needs
- Strong communication and relationship-building skills
- Right to work in the UK
- Ability to travel to Stafford Library consistently for scheduled sessions
Desirable:
- Teaching qualification, tutoring experience, or relevant SEND/AP background
- Experience with Functional Skills delivery
- Knowledge of trauma-informed or relational practice
