We are seeking an organised and proactive Management Accountant to join our team and support the continued development of our finance function.
The Role
This is a hands-on accounting role responsible for supporting the Finance Manager in the delivery of accurate financial reporting and maintaining strong financial controls across the organisation.
The successful candidate will take ownership of key accounting processes, ensuring that financial information is accurate, up to date and available to support decision making throughout the charity.
This role is ideal for an experienced Assistant Accountant looking to step into a Management Accountant position, or an existing Management Accountant seeking a rewarding role within the charity sector.
Key Responsibilities
Management Accounting
- Prepare monthly management accounts and supporting schedules.
- Produce monthly income and expenditure reports.
- Assist with budget monitoring and variance analysis.
- Support cashflow forecasting and financial planning.
- Prepare monthly financial reports for review by the Finance Manager.
Month End Procedures
- Complete month-end accounting processes.
- Prepare and post journals including accruals, prepayments and adjustments.
- Reconcile all balance sheet accounts on a monthly basis.
- Maintain a clean and accurate trial balance.
- Investigate and resolve accounting discrepancies.
Purchase Ledger
- Process supplier invoices and credit notes.
- Reconcile supplier statements.
- Prepare payment runs for approval.
- Resolve supplier queries in a timely manner.
Sales Ledger and Credit Control
- Raise sales invoices where required.
- Monitor outstanding debtor balances.
- Follow up overdue accounts.
- Reconcile customer accounts.
Banking and Reconciliations
- Complete regular bank reconciliations.
- Investigate unreconciled transactions.
- Monitor cash balances and support cashflow reporting.
Payroll Support
- Assist with payroll checking and reconciliation.
- Reconcile payroll journals and control accounts.
- Support pension reporting and related reconciliations.
Year End and Audit
- Prepare year-end working papers and schedules.
- Assist with audit preparation and auditor queries.
- Support the production of statutory accounts.
- Maintain organised and accurate financial records.
Systems and Continuous Improvement
- Maintain accounting records within Xero.
- Support improvements to finance processes and controls.
- Assist with the development of management reporting.
- Contribute to the ongoing development of the finance function.
Person Specification
Essential
- AAT Level 4 qualified or qualified by experience.
- Experience preparing management accounts or assisting with management accounts.
- Strong understanding of double-entry bookkeeping.
- Experience preparing journals, accruals and prepayments.
- Experience completing balance sheet reconciliations.
- Experience using accounting software.
- Good Excel skills.
- High level of accuracy and attention to detail.
- Strong organisational skills and ability to manage deadlines.
- Ability to work independently and take ownership of tasks.
Desirable
- Part-qualified ACCA, CIMA or equivalent.
- Experience using Xero.
- Experience supporting year-end accounts preparation.
- Experience supporting external audits.
- Charity sector experience.
- Payroll reconciliation experience.
