Role Overview
The Stores Operative is responsible for ensuring the efficient day-to-day operation of the warehouse and stores, supporting the assembly and distribution of gas metering products.
The role involves receiving and inspecting deliveries, maintaining accurate stock records, picking and packing customer orders, and ensuring materials are available to support production.
Working as part of a small, fast-paced team, you will help maintain high standards of organisation, cleanliness and safety throughout the warehouse while ensuring products are handled accurately and efficiently.
Key Responsibilities
Goods In
- Receive, unload and inspect deliveries from suppliers.
- Check deliveries against purchase orders and delivery notes, reporting shortages or discrepancies.
- Accurately book stock into the company's inventory system.
- Store materials safely and correctly in designated locations.
- Identify and report damaged or non-conforming goods.
Stock Control
- Maintain accurate stock levels through regular cycle counts and stock checks.
- Ensure stock is correctly labelled, stored and easily accessible.
- Investigate and report stock discrepancies.
- Support periodic stock takes and inventory audits.
- Rotate stock where required to minimise waste and obsolete inventory.
Picking, Packing & Dispatch
- Pick components and finished products accurately to works orders and customer orders.
- Pack goods securely to prevent damage during transport.
- Prepare shipments for dispatch using company procedures and courier requirements.
- Ensure customer orders are completed accurately and dispatched on time.
- Maintain accurate dispatch records and documentation.
Warehouse Operations
- Keep the warehouse clean, organised and safe at all times.
- Operate manual handling equipment safely and in accordance with company procedures.
- Assist with loading and unloading vehicles.
- Ensure storage areas are maintained to maximise efficiency and safety.
- Support the Workshop Manager with general warehouse duties as required.
Production Support
- Supply production areas with components and materials as required.
- Return unused materials to stock accurately.
- Assist with kitting components for production assemblies.
- Support production teams during busy periods where required.
- Help maintain efficient workflow between stores and assembly operations.
Health, Safety & Compliance
- Follow all Health & Safety policies, procedures and safe working practices.
- Wear appropriate PPE and maintain a safe working environment.
- Report hazards, accidents and near misses promptly.
- Ensure waste is disposed of in accordance with company procedures and environmental legislation.
- Maintain high standards of housekeeping throughout the warehouse.
Operational Performance
- Work efficiently to meet daily operational targets.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives across warehouse and production operations.
- Work collaboratively with colleagues to maintain excellent customer service levels.
Skills & Experience
Essential
- Previous experience working in a warehouse or stores environment.
- Good organisational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to work accurately and efficiently under pressure.
- Good numeracy and literacy skills.
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
- Good understanding of manual handling and warehouse safety.
- Basic IT skills, including experience using stock control or warehouse management systems.
- Reliable, punctual and flexible approach to work.
Desirable
- Previous experience in an engineering or manufacturing environment.
- Experience using ERP/MRP or warehouse management systems.
- Counterbalance Forklift Truck licence or willingness to undertake training.
