Steve Vick International (SVI) is dedicated to delivering cost-saving, innovative solutions for damaged, redundant, or outdated underground pipework. Since its foundation in 1981, SVI has been at the forefront in developing products and techniques for the repair, renovation and decommissioning of pipes. Predominantly our work has been in the gas industry but increasingly we are undertaking projects in the water and nuclear sectors.
We are looking to recruit a Design Engineer on a full time, permanent basis.
We are looking for a talented individual who can bring a positive, creative and innovative approach to the business, working as part of a team designing products from concept to implementation.
Ideally you will hold a degree in Mechanical Engineering, or Integrated Mechanical and Electronics Engineering, or with 3-5 years’ experience within a product design / mechanical / electronics engineering background.
This role is office based, with the ability to work from home when required.
Role Purpose
Within this role, you will be required to:
- Utilise CAD to develop 3D models and corresponding fabrication drawings / BOMs.
- Undertake product design improvements when the business requires.
- Analyse failures to improve future designs.
- Function well in a collaborative arena and be open minded about new ideas as well as bringing your own ideas to design discussions.
- Identify new ideas or potential products within the utilities industry and present potential conceptual designs and ideas.
- Produce written reports detailing design, testing results, conclusions and recommendations. These reports will potentially be viewed by customers and clients during and after innovation projects.
- Work within the development team to produce conceptual ideas for products and services that can be manufactured and supplied to the UK utilities industries. These currently include gas, water and nuclear.
- On occasion, travel within the UK to observe, assess and report on the field trial use of products that you have designed for specific projects.
- Attend exhibitions and industry meetings to improve your knowledge of the industry and help identify possible business opportunities.
Success Factors
The ideal candidate will have an appreciation of the following:
- Experience in the design of moving parts and small/medium machinery.
- Ability to function as part of a design team where teamwork and collaboration are key to the successful delivery of projects.
- A clear and in depth understanding of the product design process, with the ability to manage your own time and workload.
- A willingness to learn new skills and to work with other members of the team when designing new products and systems.
- A drive to continually learn and improve, including further education, CPD and in-house training
Competencies, Skills and Knowledge
The ideal candidate will hold a degree in one of the following: Mechanical Engineering, Integrated Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, or a similar STEM subject. Applicants without a degree will also be considered, if relevant experience is held.
Ideally you will:
- Have a strong ability using CAD software (Autodesk Inventor, or similar)
- Strong ability to carry out tasks such as finite element analysis, structural calculations & various mechanical design functions
- Experience with rapid prototyping techniques, and
- Strong understanding of manufacturing techniques, with the ability to design for manufacture
- Strong ability using Microsoft Office, including MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint etc
- An awareness of project management software, such as Asana or Jira
- Potentially hold experience in electronics design, but this is not a requirement.
Key Duties/Responsibilities
- Use CAD software (Autodesk Inventor or similar) to create 3D models, drawings and BOMs

- Manage your own workload to deliver projects on time
- Commit to ongoing professional development, potentially working towards registration with a recognised engineering body such as iMechE
