Job Description:
Experienced Heating Engineer – Boiler Installations
O’Neil Boiler Company, part of O’Neil Gas & Plumbing Ltd
Location: Ayrshire, covering Ayrshire, Renfrewshire and South Lanarkshire
Salary: £31,000–£34,000 basic salary
Expected earnings: £38,000+ with overtime, incentives and bonuses
Hours: 40 hours per week
Contract: Full-time, permanent
A Secure, Long-Term Opportunity for an Experienced Heating Engineer
O’Neil Boiler Company is looking for an experienced Heating Engineer to join our growing installation team.
This position is specifically for an engineer with at least five years of post-qualification experience who can confidently complete boiler installations independently, from start to finish.
We currently install more than 400 gas boilers each year and expect to increase to approximately 40–45 private installations per month within the next six months. We are strengthening our team now to support this growth and create additional capacity for the years ahead.
All of our boiler installations are for private customers. We do not carry out social housing installation contracts, allowing our engineers to focus on delivering high-quality workmanship and excellent customer service.
Leave the Uncertainty Behind
You may currently be self-employed and finding that the pressures of running your own business are continuing to increase.
Quoting, chasing payments, managing paperwork, arranging materials, dealing with cancellations and finding a consistent flow of profitable work can take time away from the part of the job you enjoy most.
Alternatively, you may be employed by a smaller company that cannot offer consistent work throughout the year or provide the long-term opportunities you are looking for.
At O’Neils, we take care of the administration, scheduling, marketing, customer enquiries and business responsibilities. This allows you to focus on completing high-quality installations and taking pride in your work.
At a time when much of the industry is moving towards subcontracting and temporary labour, we remain committed to offering secure, permanent employment. We want to build a strong team of experienced engineers who can grow with the company.
The Role
You will be responsible for installing a wide range of domestic gas heating systems, including:
- Combi boiler installations
- Heat-only boiler installations
- System boiler installations
- Boiler conversions and system upgrades
- Full heating system installations
- Radiator and heating-control upgrades
- Fault-finding and commissioning
- Completing installations independently from start to finish
- Providing a professional service to private homeowners
Experience in servicing, repairs and general plumbing would also be beneficial. As part of the wider O’Neil Gas business, we can offer engineers a varied workload and opportunities to develop additional skills.
About O’Neil Gas
O’Neil Gas is a successful, family-run business with more than 30 years of experience.
We employ approximately 26 members of staff and have annual turnover of around £2.5 million. Our team completes more than 17,000 jobs every year across gas, plumbing, boiler installations, commercial services, electrical work, air conditioning and renewable technologies.
The strength of the business includes:
- More than 7,000 O’Neil Care members
- Over 400 private boiler installations each year
- Consistent work throughout all 12 months of the year
- An established customer base across Ayrshire and surrounding areas
- A strong reputation for quality workmanship and customer service
- Continued investment in our engineers, systems and future growth
You will be joining a stable, ambitious company with the resources, customer base and workload to provide genuine long-term job security.
Why Join O’Neils?
Secure Employment
We provide permanent employment and consistent work throughout the year. Our engineers do not have to rely solely on seasonal demand or short-term contracts.
Strong Earning Potential
You will receive a starting salary of £31,000–£34,000, depending on your experience and ability.
Additional earnings are available through:
- Regular overtime
- Performance incentives
- Company bonuses
- Opportunities to take on additional responsibility
High-performing engineers can earn £38,000 or more.
Salary Progression
The advertised salary is your starting salary.
After approximately six months, we will hold a performance review to discuss your progress, the value you have delivered and whether an increase to your basic salary is appropriate.
We believe that engineers who improve, take responsibility and consistently perform at a high level should be recognised and rewarded.
Consistent Private Installation Work
Our installation division works primarily with private homeowners. You will be carrying out planned installations for customers who have chosen O’Neils based on our reputation, service and experience.
Investment in Your Development
We are known for investing in our engineers.
We have our own training area at our head office in Ayr and provide access to internal development, ongoing CPD and paid external training courses.
There may also be future opportunities to develop skills in:
- Commercial gas
- Air conditioning
- Heat pumps
- Renewable heating
- Battery storage
- Electrical and smart-heating technology
- Supervisory or specialist roles
Established and Supportive Team
You will be joining a mixture of experienced engineers and newer talent within a supportive team environment.
We value engineers who take pride in their work, support their colleagues and want to contribute to the continued success of the company.
