After School Club Support Worker (Permanent Position – Term Time)
Pay: £10.85 – £12.71 per hour
£12.96 per hour for candidates who hold a relevant SVQ Level 3 qualification.
Hours: 25 hours per week
Monday to Friday: 7:30am – 9:00am and 2:30pm – 6:00pm
Please note: The working hours for this role are fixed, and the start times of 7:30am and 2:30pm are non-negotiable due to the operational needs of the service. Unfortunately, we are unable to offer flexibility around these start times. If you are unable to commit to these hours on a regular basis, please do not apply, as this role will not be suitable.
Training opportunities and qualifications can be undertaken in post.
We are looking for a dynamic and enthusiastic Support Worker to join our Breakfast and After School Club, supporting children aged 4–12 years through engaging, high-quality care and play opportunities. You will work as part of a friendly team of approximately nine staff, supervising play and delivering a safe, nurturing and stimulating environment where children can learn, develop and have fun.

The Role Includes :
- Preparing and delivering a range of fun, engaging play activities.
- Providing high-quality care for children before and after school, including collecting children safely from school.
- Preparing and serving healthy snacks in line with healthy eating guidance.
- Preparing the play environment each day and organising resources and equipment.
- Ensuring the play areas remain safe, clean and welcoming.
- Working in line with the National Care Standards and the SSSC Codes of Practice.
- Working closely with parents, carers and other professionals to support children's wellbeing and development where required.
- Recording children's achievements and contributing to development records.
- Assisting with planning activities and supporting the wider staff team with day-to-day tasks.
- Working effectively as part of a team.
- Attending training and professional development opportunities.
- Maintaining required staff-to-child ratios at all times.
- Reading, understanding and adhering to all club policies and procedures.
Personal Qualities and Skills :
- You should understand the importance of play in supporting children's physical, social and emotional development. You'll have the creativity to plan stimulating activities while maintaining a strong awareness of safety.
- You must enjoy working with children and be caring, patient and encouraging. A friendly, positive personality, a sense of fun and plenty of energy are essential.
- The role involves lifting, bending and being active throughout the day, so a good level of physical fitness is required.
- You should be able to remain calm under pressure, use your initiative and respond confidently to changing situations and emergencies. First Aid knowledge is desirable.
- Strong communication skills are essential to build positive relationships with children, parents, carers and colleagues.
- You should be honest, reliable, trustworthy and able to work independently when required.
Essential Criteria :
- Experience of working with children in a group setting.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
- Understanding of children's health, safety and wellbeing needs.
- Ability to communicate effectively with both children and adults.
- Current PVG Scheme Membership or willingness to join the PVG Scheme.
Desirable Criteria :
- SVQ Level 2 or 3 in Playwork, Childcare or an equivalent qualification.
- First Aid and/or Food Hygiene certification.
- Experience supporting children with additional support needs.
- Knowledge of GIRFEC and SHANARRI principles.

About Us
Strathaven After School Club was established in 2000 and is based within Wester Overton Primary School. We are a registered charity (Scottish Charity No. SC205113) and operate as a non-profit organisation overseen by a voluntary Board of Directors, all of whom have children attending the Club.
We currently provide high-quality breakfast, after school and holiday care for children attending Wester Overton, Kirkland Park, St Patrick's, Glassford, Sandford and Gilmourton Primary Schools. Our aim is to provide a safe, welcoming and inclusive environment where children can play, learn and thrive.
