Job Summary:
The Able Seafarer is responsible for supporting the safe, efficient, and compliant operation of vessels across the PD Ports fleet. The role involves carrying out deck duties, supporting dredging operations, and contributing to the overall performance and safety of onboard activities.
Reporting to the Vessel Master and senior officers, the Able Seafarer plays a key role in day-to-day vessel operations, maintaining equipment, supporting navigation, and ensuring high standards of housekeeping. With a strong safety-first and team-focused mindset, the role provides essential support to safe marine operations and environmental response activities.
Summary of Main Responsibilities:
- Support safe mooring and unmooring operations
- Carry out navigational watchkeeping duties as required
- Assist in the operation of dredging equipment and associated deck machinery
- Maintain deck equipment and ensure it is in a safe and operational condition
- Ensure high standards of vessel cleanliness and housekeeping
- Assist with bunkering, watering, and general vessel support activities
- Provide relief cover across the fleet as required
- Assist with planned maintenance tasks in line with instructions from senior crew
- Follow company health, safety, and environmental procedures at all times
- Report defects, hazards, incidents, and near misses in line with procedures
Role related activities:
- Operates on a week-on/week-off rotation aligned to operational requirements
- Required to work onboard vessels in all weather conditions
- Undertakes physical deck duties as part of daily operations
- Supports maintenance, inspections, and onboard tasks
- Participates in drills and safety exercises
- Maintains required certifications and training
Experience and skills:
- Practical seafarer and deck operation skills
- Basic understanding of vessel operations and deck equipment
- Awareness of maritime safety procedures and safe working practices
- Understanding of health, safety, and environmental responsibilities onboard
- Ability to follow instructions and work safely in a team environment
- Good communication skills
- Strong awareness of safety and operational procedures
Education and exposure:
- Navigational Watch Rating Certificate (essential)
- Experience working in a marine or seafaring environment
- Experience in dredging or similar operations (desirable)
- Engine Room Watch Rating Certificate (desirable)
- Valid ENG1 Medical Certificate (essential)
