We are recruiting on behalf of a welcoming primary school in Lewisham for an experienced Caretaker to join their team immediately.
This is an excellent opportunity for a practical, reliable, and proactive individual with strong maintenance skills to play a vital role in ensuring the school site remains safe, secure, clean, and well-maintained for pupils, staff, and visitors.
Key Responsibilities
- Carry out day-to-day site maintenance, repairs, and general caretaking duties across the school.
- Complete minor plumbing repairs, including fixing leaks, replacing taps, unblocking sinks, and carrying out basic pipework maintenance.
- Undertake woodwork and carpentry tasks such as repairing doors, locks, shelving, fencing, furniture, and other timber fixtures.
- Carry out painting, decorating, basic electrical maintenance (where appropriate), and general DIY repairs.
- Open and secure the school site each day, ensuring buildings are safe and secure.
- Conduct routine health and safety inspections, fire alarm testing, emergency lighting checks, and risk assessments.
- Liaise with contractors and supervise maintenance works carried out on site.
- Maintain school grounds, including litter picking, gritting, minor gardening, and ensuring outdoor areas remain safe and presentable.
- Monitor stock levels of maintenance supplies and report any defects requiring specialist attention.
- Support the school with room setups, deliveries, furniture moves, and site logistics for events.
About You
- Previous experience as a Caretaker, Site Assistant, Site Supervisor, Premises Assistant, Maintenance Operative, Handyperson, or Facilities Assistant, ideally within a school or public sector environment.
- Confident carrying out general building maintenance, plumbing, carpentry, decorating, and DIY repairs.
- Good understanding of health and safety legislation and safe working practices.
- Able to work independently, prioritise workloads, and respond quickly to maintenance issues.
- Reliable, trustworthy, and committed to maintaining a safe environment for children and staff.
- Excellent communication skills with a positive, can-do attitude.
