The role
This role requires flexibility around shift times, with shifts typically working 5:00pm–1:00am or 1:00pm–10:00pm, depending on holiday cover and business requirements.
We are looking for a reliable and hardworking Low Risk Hygiene Operative to join our Hygiene team.
The purpose of the role is to help maintain a clean, safe and hygienic working environment throughout the Low Risk area. You will complete routine and responsive cleaning activities, ensure hygiene supplies are available, remove waste safely and maintain accurate cleaning records.
This is an important operational role. The standards maintained by the Hygiene team help to protect our colleagues, our products and our customers.
You will work closely with colleagues in Hygiene, Production, Low Risk and Technical, responding promptly to cleaning requirements and supporting the safe and efficient running of the site.
Key responsibilities
You will be responsible for:
- Keeping floors in the Low Risk area clean, clear and dry.
- Responding promptly and safely to spillages.
- Emptying small waste bins and compactor bins at the required frequency.
- Cleaning toilets and welfare facilities to the required standard.
- Keeping relevant external areas clean, safe and tidy.
- Cleaning and replenishing hand-washing stations.
- Washing soiled equipment or items in accordance with company procedures.
- Baling cardboard and disposing of waste through the correct waste streams.
- Completing cleaning schedules, checks and other required paperwork accurately and on time.
- Reporting incomplete tasks, hygiene concerns, damage, defects or shortages promptly to the appropriate manager.
- Following instructions from the Low Risk Manager, Hygiene Manager, Technical team or other nominated manager.
- Undertaking additional cleaning activities when required to maintain hygiene and operational standards.
- Supporting other members of the Hygiene team where appropriate.
- Using cleaning chemicals, equipment and personal protective equipment correctly and safely.
- Following site rules, food safety requirements, health and safety procedures and hygiene standards at all times.
- Helping to prevent slips, trips, contamination risks and other hazards by maintaining a safe and orderly working environment.
- Taking reasonable care of cleaning equipment and reporting anything that is damaged or not working correctly.

Knowledge and experience
Essential
- A willingness to learn and follow food safety, hygiene and health and safety requirements.
- The ability to understand and follow cleaning instructions and schedules.

Desirable
- Previous experience of cleaning, hygiene or housekeeping work.
- Experience of working within a food manufacturing, production, warehouse or similar environment.
- Basic food safety or hygiene awareness.
- Experience of completing cleaning or compliance records.
Physical and working requirements
The role involves practical cleaning work within a busy food manufacturing environment. Applicants should be comfortable with:
- Being active and on their feet for much of the shift.
- Carrying out repetitive cleaning activities.
- Bending, reaching and moving cleaning equipment.
- Wearing the required protective clothing and personal protective equipment.
- Working in different areas and temperatures within the site.
- Working around production activity while following hygiene and safety controls.
- Handling cleaning products after receiving the appropriate training.
- Working an agreed shift pattern, with flexibility to work different shift times as required which may include weekends or Bank Holidays where required.
Training and support
Full induction and role-specific training will be provided. This will include, as appropriate:
- Site hygiene rules.
- Basic food safety.
- Health and safety.
- Safe use of cleaning chemicals.
- Correct use of cleaning equipment.
- Personal protective equipment.
- Waste handling.
- Cleaning schedules and record completion.
- Reporting hazards, defects and hygiene concerns.
