Finance Manager / Management Accountant
Location: Honiton
Hours: Monday to Friday, 9:00am–3:00pm
Self-employed position
We are looking for an experienced and commercially minded Finance Manager / Management Accountant to join our growing team.
OJ Gyms is currently going through a significant period of expansion. As the business grows, our financial requirements are becoming increasingly complex, and we need someone who can do considerably more than simply process accounts.
We are looking for someone who can develop a strong understanding of how our business operates across multiple locations and help us make informed decisions around cash flow, expenditure, investment and expansion.
The successful candidate will work closely with the owners and senior management team and will be expected to have a clear, up-to-date understanding of the financial position of the business.
The Role
A major part of this position will be helping us understand not simply where the business has been financially, but where it is going.
You will help us plan ahead, anticipate periods of pressure on cash flow, understand upcoming financial commitments and determine where money can be allocated across the business.
You will be responsible for:
* Maintaining accurate and up-to-date financial records across the business.
* Managing and reconciling company bank accounts.
* Producing and maintaining weekly and monthly cash-flow forecasts.
* Monitoring expected income and expenditure and highlighting potential cash-flow pressures well in advance.
* Helping the directors understand how much cash is genuinely available for investment and expansion.
* Producing monthly management accounts and providing clear explanations of the numbers.
* Preparing budgets and forecasts across the business.
* Comparing actual performance against budgets and identifying significant variances.
* Helping allocate expenditure between existing sites, new gym developments, equipment, staffing, marketing and other operational requirements.
* Tracking the financial performance of individual gym locations.
* Helping us understand the profitability and financial requirements of existing and proposed sites.
* Monitoring upcoming liabilities including VAT, PAYE, corporation tax and other significant payments.
* Supporting financial planning for new gym openings and major capital expenditure.
* Maintaining visibility over supplier commitments and planned expenditure.
* Processing and reconciling purchase and sales ledgers.
* Preparing and posting journals, accruals and prepayments.
* Completing bank and balance-sheet reconciliations.
* Assisting with VAT returns and year-end accounting requirements.
* Managing supplier payments, staff expenses and petty cash.
* Supporting credit control and resolving supplier/customer queries.
* Producing financial reports and analysis for the directors when required.
* Working with our external accountants where necessary.
What We Need From You
We are looking for someone who is comfortable working in a fast-moving and rapidly changing business.
Our cash requirements can change quickly as new sites, equipment purchases, building works and other opportunities arise. We therefore need someone who can keep financial information current and adapt forecasts as circumstances change.
You should be someone who can look at the numbers and say:
“This is where we are now, this is what we have committed over the next few months, this is what is coming in, and this is what we can safely spend.”
We want someone who will take the time to understand how OJ Gyms operates rather than simply processing transactions.
About You
Ideally, you will have:
* At least 3 years’ experience within accounts, management accounts or a similar finance role.
* Experience managing the finances of a Limited, VAT-registered company.
* Strong experience with cash-flow forecasting, budgeting and financial planning.
* The ability to analyse financial information and communicate it clearly to business owners and managers.
* AAT Level 4 or equivalent qualification as a minimum; part-qualified or qualified ACCA/CIMA would be advantageous.
* Strong Excel skills, including formulas, lookups, pivot tables and financial modelling.
* Experience with accounting software such as Xero, Sage or QuickBooks.
* Excellent attention to detail and accurate record keeping.
* Strong organisational skills and the ability to prioritise in a busy environment.
* The confidence to question expenditure or highlight financial concerns when necessary.
* The ability to work independently and use your own initiative.
* Strong written and verbal communication skills.
* The ability to adapt quickly as the requirements of the business change.
Experience within a multi-site, leisure, retail, hospitality or rapidly expanding business would be particularly advantageous.
The Person We’re Looking For
This role would suit someone who enjoys being involved in the commercial side of a business rather than simply producing historical accounts.
We want someone who becomes a trusted financial point of reference for the directors and develops a detailed understanding of our operation.
OJ Gyms is in an exciting period of growth, and this position has the opportunity to develop alongside the business.
If you are commercially minded, proactive and enjoy working within a fast-paced and ambitious organisation, we would love to hear from you.
