What is Aerospace NDT?
Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) is a critical inspection process used to assess the integrity, quality and condition of materials and components without causing any damage.
Within the aerospace industry, NDT is essential for ensuring the continued safety and airworthiness of aircraft, engines and associated components. NDT technicians inspect metallic and composite materials to identify defects such as cracks, corrosion, disbonds, inclusions and manufacturing imperfections before they can impact performance or safety.
Common aerospace NDT methods include:
- Ultrasonic Testing (UT)
- Bond Testing
- Magnetic Particle Inspection (MPI)
- Dye Penetrant Inspection (DPI/PT)
- Radiographic Testing (RT)
These techniques play a vital role in maintaining the safety, reliability and performance of aircraft operating around the world.
Overall Purpose of the Role
The Apprentice Aerospace NDT Technician will learn and assist qualified technicians in carrying out pre-service and in-service Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) and inspection activities on aerospace and industrial components.
Working under supervision, the apprentice will gain practical experience in a range of inspection methods while developing an understanding of aerospace quality standards, client requirements and regulatory procedures. The role provides the opportunity to work towards recognised industry qualifications and build a career within the aerospace inspection sector.
Key Responsibilities
The Apprentice Aerospace NDT Technician will:
- Assist qualified technicians in carrying out NDT inspections on aerospace and industrial components in accordance with company procedures, client specifications and industry standards.
- Learn and apply a range of NDT methods, with a primary focus on:
- Ultrasonic Testing (UT)
- Bond Testing
- Gain exposure to additional inspection techniques including:
- Magnetic Particle Inspection (MPI)
- Dye Penetrant Inspection (DPI/PT)
- Radiographic Testing (RT)
- Support the inspection of metallic and composite aerospace components.
- Assist in the inspection of incoming materials and equipment before use.
- Learn how to interpret technical drawings, inspection instructions and work specifications.
- Gain an understanding of aerospace quality requirements and regulatory standards.
- Support qualified technicians with the preparation of inspection records and technical documentation.
- Learn how to maintain NDT equipment and ensure scheduled equipment checks are completed.
- Follow company operating procedures and client requirements at all times.
- Participate fully in apprenticeship training programmes and practical assessments.
- Maintain accurate training records and provide evidence of qualifications achieved.
- Develop the technical knowledge and practical skills required to progress towards recognised NDT certifications.
- Undertake any other duties required to support the operation of the Aerospace Test House.
Qualifications and Experience
Essential
- Minimum of 3 GCSEs at Grade 4/C or above, including:
- English
- Maths
- Science (preferred)
- Strong interest in engineering, aerospace or technical inspection disciplines.
- Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
- Self-motivated with a willingness to learn.
- Practical and organised approach to work.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
- Good communication skills.
- Satisfactory aided or unaided eyesight to meet mandatory NDT vision testing requirements.
Desirable
- Full UK driving licence or working towards obtaining one.
- Previous experience or study within engineering, manufacturing or aerospace environments.
- Knowledge of aerospace materials, engineering principles or inspection processes.
- Awareness of the services provided by Applus+.
