This role is office-based; however, it also offers some agile or remote working
Is it time to consider starting a new career and are you interested in protecting consumers from harm along with ensuring fair and honest businesses are supported?
It is an exciting time to join Trading Standards as the government are funding the recruitment and training of apprentice Trading Standards Officers to enforce new legislation on cigarettes, tobacco and vapes as well as covering the other wide range of responsibilities we have a duty to enforce.
By joining us, you will work in a small but dedicated team committed to delivering a diverse, interesting and varied workload where no two days are ever the same. Not only do we enforce legislation around tobacco and vapes, but we also have duties in fair trading, rogue trading & doorstep crime, underage sales, counterfeiting, product safety, weights & measures, animal health, feed and protecting local residents from being victims of scams. In order to carry out this work we do it by investigating complaints, inspecting all types of business premises, providing advice and taking formal enforcement action where necessary. We collect evidence, seize illegal products, take witness statements, interview suspects, compile prosecution reports and give evidence in court so a keen eye for detail is important. Our work is via local, regional and national initiatives based on complaints and intelligence available to us.
To succeed you will need to be self-motivated, enthusiastic, have excellent team working skills and be committed to an intensive course of study whilst having a busy case load. Effective communications skills will be essential to talk with a wide range of consumers, businesses, colleagues and other agencies. Previous enforcement experience and/or transferrable skills that you can bring to us would be advantageous.
Your primary duties will be in tobacco and vapes enforcement whilst undertaking the Level 6 Trading Standards Professional apprenticeship to complete by the end of the fixed term period (31st March 2029). However, you will have opportunities to work in other areas covered by Trading Standards whilst working with us.
You will receive support and mentoring to achieve your qualification in a supportive environment by experienced Trading Standards professionals.
We operate flexible working arrangements where agile working is encouraged and supported which includes some working from home. A full driving licence and use of a car is essential.
