As part of our continued growth in Peterlee, we are seeking Mechanical Fitters to support both the manufacture of new heat exchangers and the servicing, refurbishment and repair of customer equipment.
This role combines mechanical assembly, testing, inspection, repair and overhaul activities, offering a varied and rewarding opportunity within a growing engineering business.
About the Role
This position offers the opportunity to work across the complete lifecycle of heat exchanger equipment, from the assembly and testing of new products through to the inspection, repair and refurbishment of equipment returned from service. Successful candidates will develop specialist expertise within a globally recognised heat exchanger business and may have future opportunities to support customer site work and field service projects both within the UK and internationally.
Key Responsibilities
New Product Assembly
- Assemble Dry Air Coolers (DAC), Charge Air Coolers (CAC) and associated heat exchanger products.
- Build assemblies in accordance with engineering drawings, specifications and work instructions.
- Install mechanical components, headers, frames and ancillary equipment.
- Carry out dimensional and quality inspections.
Testing & Inspection
- Conduct hydrostatic and pneumatic pressure testing.
- Perform leak testing and fault diagnosis.
- Complete inspection and quality documentation.
- Ensure all products meet company and customer quality requirements.
Service & Refurbishment
- Strip, inspect and assess customer heat exchangers.
- Diagnose mechanical defects and recommend repair solutions.
- Clean, repair and refurbish heat exchanger components and assemblies.
- Replace tubes, headers and damaged components as required.
- Rebuild equipment to approved specifications.
- Support root cause investigations and failure analysis activities.
Workshop & Field Service Support
- Support workshop overhaul and refurbishment activities.
- Assist with customer site work and field service projects where required.
- Prepare equipment for customer inspection and dispatch.
Continuous Improvement & Safety
- Maintain a safe and organised workplace.
- Follow all Health, Safety and Environmental requirements.
- Support Lean Manufacturing and Continuous Improvement initiatives.
- Promote quality, teamwork and customer satisfaction.
Essential Skills & Experience
Applicants should possess:
- Time-served Mechanical Fitter, Maintenance Technician or equivalent trade background.
- Recognised NVQ Level 3, City & Guilds, Apprenticeship or equivalent qualification in Mechanical Engineering.
- Experience in mechanical assembly, overhaul or maintenance activities.
- Ability to read engineering drawings and technical documentation.
- Strong mechanical aptitude and fault finding capability.
- Good attention to detail and quality standards.
Desirable Skills & Experience
Experience in one or more of the following areas would be advantageous:
- Marine, power generation or industrial equipment.
- Pressure testing and leak detection.
- Brazing or fabrication.
- Shutdown or maintenance projects.
- Customer site or field service activities.
