Role Overview:
As a Surfacing Operative, you will work as part of an asphalt machine gang to deliver high‑quality surfacing works across the South East region. You will support the safe and efficient operation of plant, vehicles, and equipment, ensuring all works meet company standards and client expectations. This role requires strong teamwork, communication, and a commitment to safe working practices.
Key Responsibilities:
- Contribute to the delivery of high‑quality asphalt surfacing works as part of a coordinated machine gang.
- Operate and manoeuvre vehicles and plant safely, using both general operating skills and specialist machinery competence.
- Maintain clear, consistent communication with gang members, foremen, and site management to ensure smooth progress of works.
- Follow all Connor Construction Health, Safety & Environmental procedures while carrying out daily tasks.
- Look after plant and equipment, reporting any defects promptly and ensuring everything is used safely and responsibly.
- Assist with all aspects of the surfacing process, including laying, levelling, compacting, and finishing asphalt materials.
- Work in line with site instructions, traffic management setups, and project specifications.
- Uphold professional standards and represent Connor Construction positively on every site.
You Must Have:
- A valid CSCS card.
- Previous experience in road surfacing, highways, or heavy civil operations.
- Recognised plant‑operation certification such as NPORS, CPCS, or equivalent for relevant machinery (paver, roller, planer, etc.), or a willingness to obtain these tickets through company-supported training.
- A full UK driving licence (preferred).
- Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively within a surfacing gang.
- A consistent commitment to safe working practices and delivering high‑quality workmanship.
Additional Information:
Connor Construction operates multiple surfacing gangs across the South East. Our regional teams support works throughout Kent, Surrey, East Sussex, West Sussex, Hampshire, Berkshire, Oxfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Hertfordshire, Essex, and Greater London. Overtime, night shifts, and weekend work may be required depending on programme demands.
