Health and Safety Advisor
The role is hybrid, split between:
- Office-based work at the company's headquarters in Chelmsford, Essex.
- Site-based work at various locations across Essex, London, Kent, Suffolk, and Cambridge.
The employer will provide:

Job Summary
We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Health and Safety Advisor specialising in Highways and Groundworks to join our team. The successful candidate will be responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining health and safety policies across highway and groundworks projects. This role requires a proactive approach to risk management, ensuring compliance with relevant legislation, and fostering a safety-conscious culture within the organisation. An understanding of systems within construction environments is highly desirable to effectively oversee safety protocols on site. The position offers an opportunity to contribute significantly to the safety standards of small to large-scale infrastructure highway and groundworks projects.
Duties
- Develop, review, and implement health and safety policies tailored to highways and groundworks operations.
- Conduct regular site inspections to identify potential hazards and ensure adherence to safety regulations.
- Produce quality risk assessments, method statements, safe working practices for diverse projects and lift plans/temporary works SSOW.
- Lead investigations into accidents or near-misses, compiling reports and recommending corrective actions.
- Deliver training sessions and toolbox talks to site personnel on health, safety, and environmental matters and monitoring/managing training matrix for all staff.
- Liaise with clients, contractors, and regulatory bodies to ensure compliance with legal requirements.
- Monitor ongoing site activities to ensure the correct use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and safe working procedures.
- Oversee safety protocols on site, ensuring all systems are compliant with industry standards.
- Maintain accurate records of inspections, incidents, training sessions, and safety audits.
- Promote a culture of continuous improvement in health and safety practices across all projects.
Requirements
- Proven experience as a Health and Safety Advisor within highways or groundworks sectors.
- Strong knowledge of UK health and safety legislation relevant to construction environments.
- Experience in temporary works, lift planning and underground services.
- Relevant qualifications such as IOSH/NEBOSH General Certificate or equivalent are essential.
- Excellent organisational skills with the ability to prioritise tasks effectively.
- Strong communication skills to engage with diverse teams at all levels of the organisation.
- Ability to conduct thorough risk assessments and produce detailed reports.
- Proactive attitude with a commitment to maintaining high standards of health and safety compliance.
- Valid UK driving licence is preferred due to site visit requirements.
