What you'll be doing
We're looking for a diligent and detail-oriented Component Engineer to join our Manufacturing Operations team in the UK. You'll play a key role in ensuring our products are built using the highest quality electronic and electro-mechanical components. Working closely with Engineering, Manufacturing, Test, Quality and Supply Chain teams, you'll support both new product introduction and volume manufacturing by driving component selection, qualification and lifecycle management. You'll also work directly with suppliers and manufacturing partners to minimise supply risk and enable the successful delivery of Graphcore's next generation AI hardware.
The Team
You'll join the Manufacturing and Technology Process team within Graphcore's Operations organisation. The team is based across Bristol, Cambridge and Taiwan and is responsible for developing and maintaining robust manufacturing processes across wafer fabrication, package assembly and PCBA subcontract manufacturing. Working closely with both internal engineering teams and external manufacturing partners, the team ensures our products are manufactured to the highest standards of quality, reliability and performance.
Responsibilities and Duties:
- Support the selection, evaluation and qualification of electronic and electro-mechanical components to meet product design and manufacturing requirements.
- Create and maintain approved component lists and Bills of Materials (BOMs) using Arena PLM and related engineering systems.
- Ensure components and products comply with relevant industry standards covering quality, safety, environmental and regulatory requirements.
- Research emerging component technologies to support future Graphcore products and manufacturing capabilities.
- Assess component availability, manage lifecycle and obsolescence risks, and develop alternative sourcing strategies to ensure continuity of supply.
- Work closely with Engineering, Manufacturing, Quality, Supply Chain and external contract manufacturers to resolve component-related issues.
- Support supplier engagement and qualification activities, including occasional international travel to supplier and manufacturing partner sites.
Candidate Profile Requirements:
- Strong experience managing electronic components throughout their lifecycle within a high-technology manufacturing environment.
- In-depth knowledge of BOM management and component sourcing tools such as Arena and SiliconExpert.
- Excellent understanding of electronic components, datasheets and key electrical parameters.
- Good knowledge of PCB manufacturing and SMT assembly processes.
- An understanding of the relationships between silicon, package and PCB design.
- Experience working with global electronics suppliers and offshore contract manufacturers.
- Strong analytical, organisational and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to build effective relationships across global engineering and operations teams.
- Experience using data analysis and reporting tools such as Excel and Power BI.
- A BEng, HND or equivalent qualification in Electronic Engineering (or equivalent industry experience).
