Highdown Garden Centre is an independent family run business nestled in the foothills of the South Downs.
We are lucky to have our very own glasshouses on site where we grow a lot of our own plant stock. We are looking to focus on further development and expansion of our plant areas both indoors and outdoor.
With that in mind we have a fantastic new opportunity for an experienced Plant Area Supervisor (Horticulture) to join our team.
The role involves:
· Plant care and maintenance which includes monitoring plant health, overseeing the watering, feeding, pruning and implementing seasonal care practices to ensure plant health throughout the year.
· Managing plant stock levels, ordering new plants, and ensuring deliveries are properly received and displayed. Ensuring the area is stocked with a good variety of plants to meet customer demands and displays enhance visual appeal and promote seasonal products.
· Assisting customers with advice on plant selection, care, and placement, offering expert horticultural knowledge. Handling customer inquiries and complaints, providing a friendly and professional service. Promoting special offers, seasonal plants, and related garden products.
· Working with the management team to set sales targets for the plant area. Managing expenses related to the care and maintenance of plants and ensuring profitability. Analysing sales trends and making recommendations for improving plant selection or promotional efforts.
· Leading and managing a small team responsible for plant care, customer service, and general area maintenance. Delegating tasks effectively, providing training on plant care, and ensuring that high standards of customer service and plant maintenance are upheld. Motivating the team and managing their schedules, ensuring adequate coverage of the plant area.
· Ensuring the plant area is safe for both staff and customers by regularly checking for hazards such as spills, broken equipment, or overgrown plants. Keeping walkways clear and ensuring that displays are stable and accessible.
· You will be required to be part of the garden centre management team with some additional duty management responsibilities.
· This role requires a combination of horticultural knowledge, leadership skills, and customer service abilities, all focused on ensuring the plant section thrives as a key part of the garden centre’s overall offering.
The successful candidate must have:
· Garden centre experience, including retail selling skills and a have passion for horticulture.
· Be credible and confident in their plant knowledge, qualifications would be ideal but are not a necessity.
· Experience of visual merchandising and have a flare for creating dramatic and interesting plant displays.
· Be commercially aware, driving sales and profits.
· Experience (or the ability to learn) buying from a range, selected by the Manager/Director.
· Experience of leading, managing and motivating the team, ensuring that they exercise their responsibilities in full.
· High quality standards and an eye for detail.
· Exceptional IT and organisational skills.
· You’ll be a role model for excellent customer service and be willing to work in a hands-on capacity whilst leading the team.
· This is a full time and permanent position, working on average 39 hours per week.
