We are a growing plant hire, heavy equipment supply and plant engineering services company providing equipment servicing, maintenance and breakdown support to customers across London and surrounding areas.
We are looking for an experienced and motivated Mobile Plant Engineer / Field Service Engineer to join our team.
This is a varied role combining hands-on plant engineering and customer/business development.
The successful candidate will attend customer sites to carry out breakdowns, servicing, inspections, fault finding and repairs on construction and heavy plant equipment. In addition, they will help us develop new customer relationships and generate new business by identifying potential customers, visiting sites, speaking with contractors and construction companies, and promoting our plant engineering and support services.
We are looking for someone who is technically strong, professional with customers and commercially minded, with the confidence and initiative to help grow the business.
Key ResponsibilitiesPlant Engineering & Field Service
- Attend customer sites across London and surrounding areas to carry out plant breakdowns, servicing, maintenance and repairs.
- Diagnose mechanical, hydraulic and electrical faults on construction and heavy plant equipment.
- Carry out preventative maintenance, inspections and servicing.
- Repair and replace mechanical, hydraulic and electrical components.
- Carry out fault finding using diagnostic equipment, electrical schematics, hydraulic diagrams and technical manuals.
- Work on a range of construction and industrial equipment, including excavators, dumpers, telehandlers, rollers, forklifts and other heavy machinery.
- Respond quickly and professionally to customer breakdown requests.
- Complete service reports, inspection sheets and job records accurately.
- Identify parts and materials required for repairs and communicate these to the company.
- Ensure all work is completed safely, efficiently and to a high professional standard.
- Minimise customer downtime by diagnosing problems effectively and completing repairs wherever possible on site.
Customer Service & Business Development
- Develop and maintain strong relationships with existing customers.
- Visit construction sites, contractors, plant hire companies and other potential customers to introduce our services.
- Identify new business opportunities for plant servicing, maintenance, breakdown support, repairs and equipment supply/hire.
- Generate leads and actively develop new customer accounts.
- Speak with site managers, plant managers, fleet managers, contractors and business owners to understand their requirements.
- Promote the company's engineering and plant support services.
- Follow up quotations, enquiries and potential new customers.
- Build long-term relationships and encourage repeat business.
- Identify opportunities where customers require additional equipment, servicing or ongoing maintenance support.
- Provide feedback to management regarding market opportunities, customer requirements and competitor activity.
- Represent the company professionally at customer sites and industry meetings.
- Help increase the company's customer base and revenue.
Requirements & ExperienceTechnical Experience
- Proven experience as a Mobile Plant Engineer, Plant Fitter, Field Service Engineer, Heavy Plant Technician or similar.
- Strong mechanical and hydraulic knowledge.
- Good electrical fault-finding skills.
- Experience working with construction plant, heavy equipment or similar machinery.
- Experience carrying out mobile breakdown repairs and servicing.
- Ability to diagnose faults and work independently at customer sites.
- Ability to read hydraulic diagrams, electrical schematics and technical manuals.
- Good knowledge of diesel engines, hydraulics, transmissions and electrical systems.
- Experience with equipment such as JCB, CAT, Kubota, Volvo, Takeuchi, Manitou, Merlo, Bobcat, Komatsu or similar would be advantageous.
- Relevant engineering qualification such as NVQ Level 2/3, City & Guilds or equivalent is desirable.

- Previous sales, business development or customer-facing experience would be an advantage.
- Ability to identify opportunities and turn enquiries into work.

- Professional and trustworthy when representing the company.
- Strong organisational and time-management skills.
- Full UK driving licence.

The Person We Are Looking For
We are looking for more than just a mechanic.
The ideal candidate will be an experienced plant engineer who enjoys dealing with customers and has the ambition to help grow a business.
You should be able to attend a customer's site, diagnose a machine problem, carry out the repair professionally and build a good relationship with the customer at the same time.
You should also be comfortable looking for opportunities to introduce our services to new customers.
For the right person, this role could develop into an important position within the company, combining engineering, customer management and business development.
